The WB has opted against renewing the Joss Whedon-produced drama for a sixth season. Frog topper Jordan Levin informed Whedon of the move Thursday night.
Move on the surface is a head-scratcher: Skein is the net's second highest-rated hour among viewers 18-34 and fourth among 12-34 auds. Its numbers have been solid this year, even against brutal competish on Wednesday night.
But Frog execs are also facing the reality of an aging sked, with skeins such as "Charmed," "7th Heaven" and "Gilmore Girls" potentially facing final seasons next year. WB topper Jordan Levin said the net needs to find timeslots to establish a new generation of hits.
Such decisions are usually made in May, when nets have all of their new development in front of them.
"(But) like some of the great series that are leaving the air this year, including 'Frasier' and 'Friends,' the cast, crew, writers and producers of 'Angel' deserve to be able to wrap up the series in a way befitting a classic television series and that is why we went to Joss to let him know that this would be the last year of the series on the WB," Levin said. "We have discussed continuing the 'Angel' legacy with special movie events next year, which is still on the table."

David Boreanaz, as Angel, faces the same problem on 'Angel' that Brent Spinner, as Data, faced on 'The Next Generation' -- both actors played characters who were ageless, and yet the actors themselves weren't. With each successive year, it becomes harder for those in makeup to change the appearances of the actors to fit the character. Boreanaz's appearance has changed considerably since he began playing the character of Angel in 1996. So, unless the story were to change so that Angel could age, then the series being canceled isn't that bad from a character standpoint.
That said, I thought 'Angel' was doing fairly well this season. The third and fourth seasons were depressing and seemed never to end. I only wish that the series could return to the feeling it has in the first and second season when Angel Investigations was a small operation and Wolfram and Hart were the bad guys.
Of course, seeing as Buffy moved to UPN after the WB canceled it after its fifth season, anything is possible. With any luck, 'Enterprise' will be canceled and 'Angel' put in its place.

You're right, Robert GGG, you're absolutely right. I think, sometimes, the problem both Buffy and Angel have/had is that they created such a huge adversary to fight each season that they struggled to go bigger and better next season and, unfortunately, lost a lot of what made them exciting and funny to watch in the first place. Buffy was terrible with this, and never really recovered from season 2- which I think was the best and combined wit and danger in just the right balance.
Angel was better earlier on, and I really don't much care for wolfram and hart, but they just won't go away  and somtimes you can have too many in a cast at a detrement to individual character developement. keep em small and tidy i say 
Queen Demon... glad she's got her Angel calender for company... though admittedly it's the farscape one that's up right now  you should see the pic, it's yummy

As much as I would love for Angel to move to a different TV station...it can't be UPN. I don't have UPN so I am saying that they can't move it there.
