This sounds like a bad problem. Usually formatting a hard drive will get rid of it but i think ive heard of viruses that still hang round after a format.

There are some viruses designed to escape detection from certain scanners. Have you emailed Norton to see what they say. They might have heard of this before and know a way to fix it.

Using my daughter's computer which is a no no since it is in her room. Don't tell her. I am not looking at anything here besides it would take a shovel *f*...... hope nothing comes from out of the bed to eat me.

Note to all: I hope to be back soon.

As many know I have been having notable problems since December regarding my computer. First started with programs just disappearing.........could not open word docs............icq unable to receive messages from most people as they are blank. Some I can receive about 6 or 7 peeps.........msn messenger disappeared.........ws_ftp, enzip, etc.

Then we noticed that we could not ftp to the counseling main site...it said we were over our allotment however Henri checked it and that was not the case.........Now it was not just me but Leeta, Smile, Zannie could not ftp either.

Now not knowing much about all this I was not sure whither these incidents were related to one another.........or if it was several things happening at once.

I do know this. My son in law builds computers........Because os these things he was going to update my computer and see what was going on. He was putting XP on my comp.........and he found something strange. It is undetectable by Internet Security, Norton Anti Virus but something was eating pieces of programs and files.

He finally downloaded my documents, fonts, favorites etc on a cdrw after a lot of trouble. ........wiped the drive put in XP and reloaded the c drive files..........immediately it starting running something moving things around.......changing things etc.

So here I sit no comp of my own........and we will have to resort to wiping the harddrive again and that means I have no files.

Zannie is noticing some of the same problems.....So what we need to know is anyone else had this? Know what it could be? And why is the anti-virus not picking up anything?

Brandon says that there are 1000's of little virus' we never know about that can infiltrate the systems.............He advised me not to accept or open and exe files, or flash not even from friends. Hard for me to believe that people are so mean to make things to hurt others for no other reason than they can. Like someone keying your car.........

Anybody have ideas? Input? Or thoughts please let us all know .........we need to be more careful as it is easy to send things to each other not knowing you have a problem.

Well, the best advice I can offer is to just stay clear of accepting any, and that is any, attachments from anyone until you can contact them by ICQ, e-mail, or whatever to ask them if they sent you something.

I don't know how your system was (or is) set up, so I really can't be of that much help. Just make sure that you have Norton configured to scan your incoming e-mail. Or, if Norton doesn't catch it, try downloading AVG Anti-Virus. AVG is the anti-virus that the ISA has been advertising for the last year or two, and I've been using it for about eight months and still not had a virus.

Best of luck to you, Z. :)

In order to update the virus definitions, what you do is open Norton, then there should be some sort of Live Update button in plain sight. For AVG, you double-click on the little icon on the bottom-right of your screen, and click on the tab 'Update Manager'.

CL5 Robert Griffith

Hmm..

When it came to the Operative System, did you have Windows 98 Second Edition installed?

How long did you have the OS you had before you tried to install XP Home/Pro edition ?

Any chance you remember any of the files that was moved and/or removed by this mysterious Bug?

*s* Another tip for if you have a (suspected) virus on yer compy.....

Wipe everything off.
Don't save files just to put them back on yer clean system.
Some virii write themselves into normal proggies or files. Should you save one of those files and put it back on a restored system, you might very well be infecting yerself again.

I had ME on it when all this happened..........ME is the most unstable system.........98 was better and it crashed but did not freeze all the time.

Got this computer for Xmas Dec 2001

Yes first thing was Microsoft word doc............

Then icq , enzip, ws_ftp........throwing errors but all the while. I update Anti - virus most every day. and never showed anything.

Richard

That is what we had to do........wipe it clean ...........2 years went poop........now have to see if anyone has the things I lost..... certainly breaks my heart. So much work up in smoke...

I have the files on a back up cd...........if I just open it to look at something without uploading it can I still reinfect?

Just think about e-mail viruses. Opening an attachment from one of them can infect your system. It's the same way, though just think of that CD as your inbox.

ME is an unstable OS.
