is it just me or does the vast majority of the community have an anti-simming tendancy?

Juvinile behavior tends to put me off simming.  Normally I can ignore the practice because it's not so intrustive or violent.  Lately it's been out of control.  So yes.

The type of "simming" that we've seen lately (read, hacking people up with lightsabers etc ad nauseam), yes.

Hmm

I guess the problem is bad simming, and bad simming is always going to turn everyone off and make them want it all to go away.

All I can hope for are some people who really need to know how to sim and sim well as that can be a lot of fun.

Well if "Good" simming at OTF is alive and well, it's been kept well hidden, and only there for a few.

"Bad" simming does indeed abound.

How many times does one have to say "take your hits" *L*

How many lightbulbs does it take to electrocute a lamer, and how would I go about turning this into a handy to use hand-held device?

It is rather sad to see the traditions of simming at the Outpost so horribly misrepresented by the now active role-players within the CCC. Something can be done about it though, and it needent be a military solution.

Oh and I think the device your thinking of michiel is a cattle prod, or some high current version of a taser...  :?

What we've seen in the past weeks/months is hardly simming.

Simming is entertaining, interesting and fun.

This, needless to say, is not.

And on a purely cat-outta-the-bag note, the Simming forum isnt down there just to look pretty. This summer, Entertainment is hoping to relaunch simming as a team. Look out for more information on this in the coming months.

And if anyone asks, it wasnt me that told you...

I'm going to weigh in here really quickly, because I have to be out in freezing cold weather to catch my bus to class in like ten minutes. Where was I?

First off, the former members of Simming are still on standby, as am I. My email and other messengers are still in my un-updated profile (as is the updated Simming logo before we went defunct!;) if ever you wanted my input. I've noted when I was in this business and I'll note it again: I'm may be rude, egotistical and arrogant, but I'm also one of the most brilliant people in my specialist fields (Simming/Roleplaying; Star Trek; Doctor Who etc), with a lot of insight and never failing with advice.

Second and my apologies for size...

This is not simming/roleplaying!

Hack slash mindless violence is not simming! It does not fall under Simming's purview, past, present or future.

Simming is about the characters, with violence only as a plot device.

If they were being violent as a result of their character, then send them to my place for a spanking before I teach them how to do it properly.

If they were being violent for the sake of being violent, talk to your friendly neighbourhood ISA.

Those are my thoughts as one of the last bastions of Simming authority in 10f; a private citizen; a 10 year veteran of simming (note the small "S") and roleplaying in general, internet wise; and a concerned patron.

Not so much honestly...

However I do agree that Role-Playing is indeed about developing a character and helping to create a story, doing it completely interactively.

Getting enough folks together that are committed to building a story is difficult and has never worked out so well at the Outpost, which is a shame really. As I happen to know some brilliant Roleplayers!

I think the bit I laughed at most was:

This is not simming/roleplaying!

But I'm very easily amused.

I also misread simming as sinning on a couple of ocasions which confused me a bit  :?

I guess in the back of my mind I was hearing some big movie producer who pumps out violent flick after violent flick justifying his contribution to the desenstisation of our world with the sentence, "It's about the CHARACTERS.  Violence is just a plot device!"

I wasn't intending to be funny, I was actually rather pee'd off when I wrote it. Mostly because I had to run to the toilet afterwards.

Generally, I'm annoyed with the entire RPing community in general. People emulate the effects without ever knowing the cause. It's like "Cowboys and Indians" without even knowing what they are, the culture, the background, why things happened like that.

Call me an old fashioned grump, but I firmly believe in the concept of First Principles.

For example, what is a car? A method of transportation which involves an enclosed space, wheels and powered by an internal combustion motor and various safety devices to keep the passengers safe.

If we keep dissecting the concept, we end up with the character being the first and last and only important aspect. Everything that happens revolves around the character.

End rant. :?

Before this turns into a style over substance critique in the world of simming I'd like to say this:

"Me big bad sith, me cut you up lightsabre"

I believe that having said this has improved the quality of life of many people around the world.  If you feel any different you are clearly wrong.

Can we please stop pretending that simming can be equated to a work of literature, film or theatre.

But it can be, Nicoll. Have you even read some of the better RPs out there? Technically they're storylines, but some are extremely well crafted and better than some novels I can name. And they're character, not plot, driven as well, so you can basically write theses and do like essays on the decisions, judgements, the why etc

I will admit the majority of them don't have a clue, but there are some truly great writers out there. Trust me on this, I know most of them. I've been doing this online simming/roleplaying stuff for ten years, almost. I can tell you instantly the problems and who's good and who's bad.

The main reason I'm rumbling about this is because Simming (note the big "S") never had this coherent policy. If we'd all just step back on everything we do and go back to First Principles, the world would be so much better.

I think what Nicoll is saying is, "The Jedi vs. The Sith" is no Oliver Twist.

*l* the mother of all stupid debates

Simming is just a hobby people do to have fun. It's whatever they want it to be. If you want to sim lots of violence just because, hey, you like simming violence, then go ahead. Ignore anyone who tells you you're not a 'true' simmer because you're not following certain rules or doing certain things.

It's your hobby so go with it and do whatever you please.

That said, you still can't break OTF's house rules regarding sex and violence while you're simming on this site. That's a different matter entirely, and if you want to add those elements to your roleplay then do so outside of this family site.

~ Zahadran Mar

P.S regarding the comments that a lot of simming here is becoming 'juvenile': have you considered the fact that some of your memebers are kids? I think kids can be forgiven for acting juvenile *l* They have as much right to sim as anyone else, and likewise someone with no talent for writing has as much right to sim as someone who writes best selling novels.
