Good point. The reason why I said "military" is because, well, they at least sound it. Admiral, Captain, and so on. And more people are familiar with the military than with SW or ST, so... I intend to explain them more fully in the thesis, but for the sake of my one-page proposal it was easier to just say "military" for people to get the gist. But thanks for pointing it out!

In my book, anything that has things like admirals, captains, commanders, lieutenants and so on is military. Whether it's sci-fi military or not, rawr.

Being in the army, i can honestly say that yes they are military ranks, all enlisted officer ranks in the navy for the most part.
Also I can say
