Who wants to help Iain with his dissertation?

I have finished programming my masters project. Now I just need a squadron of volunteers to play with it, and then take a 30 second SURVEY.

http://homepages.inf.ed.ac.uk/s0790125/mmaps/

-- the program is linked to there. There is a YouTube video with instructions (yes, you get to hear my voice). Don't forget to fill in the survey itself, where you can exalt the masterpiece of creation that is my masters project.

Thank you, squadron of volunteers!

Thank you, both...! I'm glad you liked it, and thanks for the surveys.

(As an aside - the program makes no attempt at explaining what in the world it's displaying - because there are already thousands of webpages out there which explain what the "Mandelbrot set" is, and most people aren't interested in the maths behind it...! If interested, Google/Wikipedia are your friends. But I imagine that your eyes will glaze over and you'll go "buhhhh"... )

It reminds me of this one song, you know the one I mean.

Great stuff, though. Fractals ftw!

The youtube instructional video isn't working for me. Is it just my computer?

D'oh! I wonder what went wrong with the video. Here's the standard YouTube page itself, in case embedding it went wrong for some odd reason: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMCB4C_dVyI -- if YouTube works at all, that should work!

(To make it easier to read, you may like to switch to the "High Quality" version, and view full screen. The embedded version automatically plays in high quality, and at a larger size than normal, for this reason.)

I like the word "Mandelbrot". Especially when pronounced by English-speaking folk. I presume it's named after some scientist dude or something, because I really can't see any relation between almond bread and fractals.

I think he'd be great narrating children's programs.

Yes! It's named after Benoît Mandelbrot - who is a professor at Yale.

(My Mum thought that "Julia sets" referred to some girl. I had to gently tell her that, no, they were named after Gaston Julia.)

Why, thank you!

It reminded me of late nights watching the Open University. Iain, do you own a mustard jumper and horn-rimmed specs?

Saying that, fractals FTW. I had an odd experience with fractals once, involving that and a universal theorum...

I shall use this as a backup job plan.

You should have confused her further by making up "Romeo" sets and offering a lengthy explanation as to why it is that they cannot be without each other.

Can we compromise at a whiteboard, and not bothering to shave every single day?

It hurts my eyes =O but it's interesting. I filled out your survey Iain.

And he doesn't sound proper... he sounds British, like that should come as any surprise =P I'd probably sound quite proper, but believe me it's only because I'm Canadian...

Why don't they sell it like that in school? The numbers really kind of make Math look terrifying and boring.
