I've re-installed my desktop-computer once again a few days ago (harddrive wasn't c: which resulted in some problems when installing new stuff)
So I wondered which settings / programs are the first to be done or installed with other people.

Let's take Anti-Virus and Firewall of some kind for granted (and if you don't have, don't say it) and also various drivers (motherboard, monitor, printer, etc) And in case of Windoof, Service Packs too.

Now, I'll just start myself ...

-Change folder-options to show extensions, hidden folders etc
-Change to classical everywhere - desktop options, taskbar, etc
-Change off the horrible, eye-hurting green wallpaper
-Clear the Start Menu from all those unnecessary things like XP-Tour and IE
-And a bit unusual change (not seen on any other computer) .. Adding a new Toolbar inside the Taskbar: My Computer. I remove the Title- and Text- display and have a nice 1-click shortcuts.

Programs:

-Opera-Browser with my favorite skin (so I only have to use IE this once)
-Process Explorer (replacement of Taskbar)
-Irfan View (Picture Viewer)
-Star or Open Office

Then some Internet-stuff..
-Trillian
-Thunderbird and
-TB-Tray (to mninimize Thunderbird to traybar)
-Phase5 (German HTML-editor)
-FTP-program of some kind (still looking for a good one)
-VLC

In the very end I organize my Start Menu, creating folders like Internet Audio+Video so I don't get a long long list of programs I have trouble finding something specific in.

I'm pretty sure I forgot something important, but oh well.

But like I said, I'd like to know what's essential to you...
