You cannot pass... err... win! That is to say, clearly the answer is really Andrew J Robinson. (I jest, I jest. )

When do we see the first female starship captain in a Trek story?

Take your pick, depending on technicality:

• "James T Kirk" in the form of Janice Lester in TOS: Turnabout Intruder in terms of a female in command, albeit in Kirk's body
• Unnamed Saratoga Captain in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home as the first canonical female Captain
• Captain Tryla Scott as Choc noted; who played the first named female Captain, in TNG: Conspiracy
• Kathryn Janeway in Star Trek Voyager as the first full character that recurs

Look dude, there is no technicality. It's fairly simple. You're making this much harder than it has to be.

The first time you see a female captain in Trek. I don't know how much easier to make it.

In your fantastic list, you gave the correct answer, the captain of the Saratoga in ST IV. Point to Quincy.

Way to cover the bases, Admiral. Ooby Dooby it was, by the great Roy Orbison.
