My all-time favourite episode is 'The City on the Edge of Forever'. The dramatic kick at the end and Kirk's chilling 'let's get the hell out of here' gets me every time. My top ten episodes, in no particular order (except for the fact that you now know my favourite is 'City';) is:

'The City on the Edge of Forever'
'The Ultimate Computer'
'The Doomsday Machine'
'The Corbomite Maneuvre'
'Where No Man has Gone Before'
'The Naked Time'
'Journey to Babel'
'Arena'
'Mirror, Mirror'
'The Conscience of the King'

I realise there's a preponderance of early episodes there, but I liked the first season with the easy camaraderie between the crew. We'd some times see Kirk snap at his people, then think and apologise. *l* The stories were great. Anyone got any more favourites to throw in?

Hehe. 'City' is still my fave as well. In fact, all the episodes tou mention are classics -- 'The Doomsday Machine' to this day is one of the best Sci-Fi tales I ever saw.

Ten other must-see episodes, in no particular order:

-'The Trouble With Tribbles'
-'Obsession'
-'Requiem for Methuselah'
-'All Our Yesterdays'
-'Shore Leave'
-'What Are Little Girls Made Of?'
-'Space Seed'
-'The Devil in the Dark'
-'Bread and Circuses'
-'A Private Little War'

This is by no means all of them -- of the 79 episodes made, at least 50 are what I would consider to be classics.

of course thats the only title i can really remember, im horrible with remembering titles!!

There was one where Kirk was playing a card game with the gangsta guy and he had to confuse him... so he started talking really fast about the rules of the game that were absolutly abosured... whats the eppi? that part was funny!

I Also like the Episode where the worlkd is filled with Children who die once they reach purberty...

and of course kirks battles with sentiant computers and Nieve natives that dont know how to procrate... lol

Yup... the episodes Char mentions are also good.

'A Piece of the Action', and 'Miri'. As for the last remark -- you do of course realize there is no basis for the assumption Kirk slept around with everyone in TOS itself? Just something that is being repeated over and over.

Richard, it's possible but not true. *l* Though it was partially the reason I chose my handle. I like it as we meet Sarek and Amanda, it's a rollicking good story, the Enterprise is attacked constantly and Kirk is nearly fatally injured, but STILL saves the day.

Spock's brain? Okay, it was rubbish. BUT it was entertaining rubbish! I laugh at it every time.

I agree with Jor in his statement that at least 50 episodes are what I would call 'classics', and picking a top ten is hard. Just for reference, when the official star Trek magazine did its Top Fifty Trek Moments, four of the top five were from TOS (or the TOS movies.) Not a bad strike rate!

Richard - consider youself corrected.

The shirt ripping, 'alien affair', and 'Enterprise ripped to shreds' were completely exaggarated.

If you really watch Star Trek, you'll find that there is an immense diversity in plots -- back then they still used original stories, and didn't need to rely on at least one cliché per episode.

Not to mention the alien look -- TOS had more original alien looks than the 4 Berman series combined. With Berman Trek, all alien races (except the digital 8472) look like bad acne sufferers, in TOS they relied on more than bumpy foreheads alone!

V'Ger -- did you know 'Assignment: Earth' was intended as the pilot for a loose spinoff starring Gary Seven (and Isis)?

Really a shame the network execs killed Trek before this could ever happen :(

'Charlie X' had a disturbing quality. Charlie's callousness was offset by the fact that he just didn't know any better. He was incredibly immature and lonely, and god-wafully (literally) powerful. His final pleas to stay ('I can't even touch them!';) are pretty moving.

Jor's right about the aliens. In'Journey to Babel' the Tellarites weren't too good, but the Andorians! No wonder 'Enterprise' brought thwm back, but surprise surprise, they had bumpy foreheads. *l* What's the attraction for the bumpy foreheads?

I heard someone recently complain that TOS was rubbish simply because of the effects. Well of course they don't stand up to moden comparison ( check out how gorgeous the 'Enterprise' looks in 'Trials and Tribble-ations'!;) but they were cutting edge for the day. Who can forget the moment when the enormous 'Fesarius' zooms up to the 'Enterprise' and dwarfs it? A brilliant scene technically and the music, wow!

For me TOS music was usually memorable and often quite brilliant. They often use bits of it in South Park in an obviously affectionate manner, and in 'Cable Guy' there was even a scene where two guys fight to music from 'Amok Time', complete with Vulcan weaponry! How cool is that?

Quite right about Charlie. TNG's 'True Q', with Amanda Rogers, was in a way a re-use of the same story. Other episodes which followed the same pattern, where 'The Squire of Gothos' (the first Q), and 'Who Mourns for Adonais?'. All these episodes deal with a seemingly friendly being suddenly becoming more powerful, not evil, but dangerous nonetheless.

And what about the marvellous Klingon 'War' episodes? Kang, Koloth and Kor were Kirk's most powerful of enemies -- highly intelligent, and they respected eachother. (Let's just forget about the image of Kahless).

I really feel Klingons have lost much in TNG -- while the makeup alteration was a good one (even if it _did_ start the apparent acne virus which then went on to plague the Romulans, and then every other race in the galaxy except humans -- maybe the UFP should export Clearasil?), making the Klingons the unwilling allies of the Feds weakened them. Also, the Romulan culture of honour was transplanted completely to the Klingons, leaving the Romulans without a real identity. If the original Star Trek were done today, the Centurion in 'Balance of Power' would have to be a Klingon!

I recently saw another great episode, almost as good as 'City', I nearly forgot. 'The Empath'. A beautiful, sad, story.

Classic Star Trek remains special to this day because of the issues it tackled, and the stories it told. Even though the effects are outdated, as soon as I start watching it I am enthralled by it.

And as for the effects... look for the bootleg copy of 'The Doomsday Device', with enhanced effects. It was made as an example of what could be done with all Classic Trek episodes, to give Paramount an easy chance to introduce a new generation to classic Star Trek, but of course Berman shot it down.

Well Paramount would make MILLIONS from special edition DVDs with enhanced effects, I admit I'd buy 'em, but with TOS it was the writing and acting mainly. Yes, acting, Shatner CAN act , I don't care what anyone says.

You know we should start a TOS forum full stop. *l*

Robert -- I disagree. A large number of the season 3 episodes were really good -- only after it became clear the networks were continuing to place Trek in the killer time slot, taking away most of its audience, did the message get through to writers and cast, and they apparently threw in the towel.

Of course TOS _had_ a fourth and fifth season with the animated episodes -- and if you can look past the awful animation, there are some really innovative ideas and generally good episodes in there.

The first holodeck, an aqua shuttle, more Enterprise personnel (Entertainment officer, security officers) etc.

Hey,

I just wanted to say that I enjoyed The Trouble with Tribbles,  might even be my favourite.  I did like the adaptation of the trouble with Tribbles in DS9. Charlie X as well was a great episode.

Alas like others I have a terrible memory for episode names.  SO I know there are other episodes out there that I enjoy but can't remember them.

The slightly off topic, some Chinese TV stations show TOS, alas it's voiced over and I swear they only have three people in the whole of China doing voice overs.

Still it does mean that sometimes I get to see TOS in China
Hong!! :)

Spock's Brain was stupid "Mister SPock, where are ya?"
Brain hop-up or not there's no way McCoy could've reconnected all those nerves. As he said himself "There's millions of them."

Gary Seven was cool. The spinoff would've been neat. As I recall there was another spinoff epi of TOS that never, well, spun off. Can't remember which one.
Anyone read Assignment: Eternity? It's a book with Gary in it. it's pretty neat.

Harry Mudd was cool. A loveable rogue. *l* He had a great double-act going with Kirk as well!

Re TOS being cancelled when it was, well, maybe if it had gone to a fourth season BUT been syndicated right away the boom in appreciation would have happened while it was stil on the air. Think of it . . .  better budgets, Gene back on board full time plus people like Bob Justman . . . woh knows how good TOS would have become with a fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh season? I think we'd have at least seen a return to something like season two, and maybe better. We'd have seen the Enterprise return to Earth after it's five year mission and maybe embark on another one, for example.

We can only speculate, but it's tempting to dwell upon this pipe dream!
