THE OTF WORLD MAP

Poking around online tonight, i found a neat site. Called Frapper. You can create a group, where all the members can then plot their locations around the globe by entering themselves on the map, adding a photograph too if you like, and a short little paragraph about yourself.

I thought it was pretty cool, and well suited to our global community. So, if you click on the link below....

http://www.frappr.com/theotfworldmap

and then scoot around the globe to England, you'll see my little flag. *L* Why not sign up? and we can have a great feature here on the forums.

The map is not that exact, and does not feature every place in the world. So you may have to settle for inputting a location some miles away, but members will get the general area and an idea at least of where you are on the planet.

The maps controls are pretty simple, zoom out to see the whole world, zoom in to see maps in more detail. beware though, if you live in the U.S it asks for your Zip code. I would put in a place somewhere near, but not your exact code.

Happy mapping! No putting Area 51's zip code in and peeking on the Satellite map function please! :P

Just looked at the website and added myself and realized that England is a very small country.

Why doesn't OTF make a project like this?

We had something similar to this pre-V2. I don't recall what happened to this project or why it wasn't continued. I believe JD submitted something regarding the whereabouts of this project to the suggestion box...I think it may have been lost over time though. The project, not JD's suggestion. ;)

"Why doesn't OTF make a project like this?"

The possibility of stalking perhaps? Some people don't like others to track them down to the street they are located on. (ie: being able to pan and zoom in on North America and the UK) Of course there are other ways to achieve this, so just be careful folks...if an assortment of unsavory people show up at your front door because you put yourself on the map, then that is your fault. :v

Of course if they are bearing gifts, cases of beer/wine/liquor, then by all means, invite them in. :P

OTF doesn't need a project like this, when Google has a fun one already in place :)

Anyone noticed, if you zoom right out, the map is starting to look like a game of Risk. :D

Yep, please be aware of the fact about the exact zip code going in. I would think it's enough to have a location in a very general area, no need for it to be on the button.

If you do put in your exact zip code, please remember this map has that real satellite image function. So please no nude sun bathing in the back yard! :P

I just realized...This could give ISA that Enemy of the State kind of edge they have been looking for. :?

Oh my.... what have i done!

Oh, I'm all alone down the bottom on my wee little island.  =(  Someone come live in Australia.

And you can't even zoom in on me!  So there's no chance I'll be stalked or provided with lavish gifts of alcohol from stalkers.  However, if there are any stalkers reading who would like to send me alcohol, contact me privately.  =)

How rude.

What about the beings from Mars? Ever think of us? NO! After I take time out of my busy life of observing your species you don't take time out for me to find a map of Mars.

Well.

*For those out there that don't understand me and my jokes  I am just kidding. People of Mars are a lot more understanding than this ;)  *

Erin & Dierna : I deleted the entries you both asked about. :-)

Digerati : What part of Mars are you from then? I have plenty of maps of Mars, and several GB's of Mars images, i just thought that Martians like myself were too much of a minority to cater for.

Thanks, Antz.

Whee! It's got me to within a mile or so.

Although, when you zoom in, it's put the pin in a very wierd place ... nowhere near the centre of the town that I stipulated!

Close enough, though :-)

Well,

I tried but it came back as invalid city, I looked out the window and it looked pretty valid to me :?

I tried the capital of the province but it claimed it was invalid, well as far as I know it still there, could explain why I have received no e-mails today:(

I guess it might take Beijing, but I refuse to claim to be in a city well over 1000 km away!

So sorry guys looks like you won't be able to take a close look at where I live, not that you would have been able to anyway ;) the Chinese sort of disliking that sort of thing!

Hmm

Glad that you found it was funny, that what I was aiming for *g*

By the way it now sounds valid as well, anyone like to tell frapper that Yan'an Shaanxi is a  valid city as is Xian Shaanxi a valid place.

Or for that mattter to tell google that toput a search in for Yan'an China it should come up with the more famous Yan'an and not some little place down in the South East of China!

After all it is only the place where Mulan is buried, where Mao fought the Nationlists, then the Japanese before going back to the Nationlists all over again.

As well as technically being a former capital of China.

Tis the place where Edgar Snow came and wrote his book of which the title I have fogotten has red and sun in it!

It mentioned in Wild swans of China, as that is where the writers father and mother went to.  Is talked about in white bone demon.

Is about to feature in a hollywood movie, about some American Doctor who came here.  Well okay they are coming next year to film.

So I was seriously peeved to find that google earth ignores it when doing a search and that frapper considers it invalid!
