I'm Irish. I have the red hair.  Though, some will swear it's strawberry blonde....I claim them both to be red.  But, when I say, "kiss Me I'm Irish!" to the hot boy he just goes on with his business. :(

I think 's odd to be ticked off by a marketing gimmick thingie that's pretty. Nobody's going "you should be with someone!" They're just going "show someone you care!"... surely that's not such a bad message.

And while I agree that if you love someone, you love them always, some people (insert random big macho-type guy here) need to have an excuse for being "soft."

Also, stores would not sell all this stuff if people wouldn't buy it. They put it out earlier because they have a "seasonal" section and it's better to go ahead and put stuff there than to let it sit empty for several weeks. It's common marketing practice.

I like Valentine's day - always have, with boyfriend, husband or nobody. But then to me it'll always just be the day before my birthday, and I like the pinks and lilacs and whites that get tossed around.

But yeah, I'll let you all get back to ranting about whether or not Kady is Irish and how much valentine's day sucks. Pretend I didn't say anything.

I'm not really ticked off with it. I mean, I don't much care what people do as long as I don't have to join in... but the fact is that it makes people feel bad 'cause they're alone or whatever. That's not just because of the day itself, I suppose, the day just brings it to the point. There's a whole lot of factors in there, but no one's interested in my anthropological and philosophical rambling, so I'll shut up about it.

And as far as I'm concerned, if you're born in Portugal, you're Portuguese. I'm born in Germany, so I'm German. Ray's from France, so he's French. I don't get the whole "I'm 1/8 French and 1/4 Irish and 3/8 Finnish" - I mean, what, you have a French foot and Irish knees and Finnish shoulders and arms? It just confuses matters. :(

Well if we really want to talk about what you are then it's best to say that we all part of a species with an exceptionally shallow gene pool due to inbreeding between the very small population in prehistoric Africa from which we are all descended.  :v (That senstence is too long but I'm not really in the mood to edit it, I also never checked any of the spelling or even read it :P)

I don't know where in Africa this was but as far as I'm concerned you are all Swahili.  :P

I on the other hand don't care if people are interested in my ramblings.  They're perfectly capable of skipping my posts.

I'm proud to be a Canadian.  But I'm also proud of my heratige, which IS effected (affected?) by my ancenstory. (many spelling mistakes, I apologize).  I don't see a problem with someone wanting to know my family roots.  I'll proudly say I'm mostly Swedish, with some Swiss and Scotish thrown in (and I've heard a touch of Irish but not enough to have heard more about that) and my great great great grandmother was native (I don't know how to spell the tribe name so I won't say it and embarras myself).  Researching the family history has been cool, there is actually a haunted castle in the family and an awesome ghost story to go with it.  And the Scots in the family started opium wars in China (I think that's awesome too).  I wish I knew MORE about my family, other than the part about the dumb Sweeds and all (family joke).

Besides, fun games can come from knowing your history.  At college we had a black prof and a Japanese student (who I'm sure was born in Canada, but his entire extended family lives in Japan) and who are both proud of their heratige.  The funniest things are when Yuya brags about his country and his best friend retorts with something about China and then Yuya gives him a dirty look and calls him American (and then the crowd goes "ooooooooooooh").  And Brian is forever saying "You're just racist because I'm black" and if Yuya is there, he'll add the same line about being Japanese and if my cousin and I are there, we'll make fun of them by throwing in the ol' "You're just racist because I'm 1/8th native."

All that to say, knowing where your family comes from and what traditions and culture has been passed down is not a bad thing.  There's probably some interesting surprises in the family history (for example...being 1/8th Native, if I so chose, I could apply for a tax reduction :D but I'm too lazy :( ).

VALENTINE'S DAY - sucketh but not enough for me to complain about it.

SAINT PATRICKS DAY - sucketh enough for me to loathe it in every fashion and boycott the color green on said day with the motto "You pinch me, I punch you."

Whoah, if I came off sounding like I condemned anyone for knowing their family history or that it's invalid... I didn't mean that at all. :? But for me there's a difference between "What nationality are you?" and "Where's your family from?"
Like, if I was born in Ireland but my parents were German, then I'd be Irish, but with a German heritage. Hah, I wish! :(
I think it's different for you people in America, though. I'm not privy to any inside info there. But I didn't mean that you shouldn't know where your ancestors came from if you're that way inclined. :?
Incidentally, speaking of America and ideology and stuff... is there something wrong with saying "rub out"? My Latin teacher hinted, and I'm naive and inquisitive. :? If I should shut up, tell me. :?

I find it funny that Americans would be saying they're from this or that European country and at the same time display such ignorance and disregard for the rest of the world.
I know I'm generalizing, and I'm not aiming that at any of you, since anyone coming here has at least some opening to the outside, but this whole culture puzzles me...

It's good to know your heritage and even to celebrate it.  I think the point made was that knowing your heritage and claiming to be (insert nationality A here) when you and your parents have never been to (insert country A here) is a different thing.

I think there is a grammatical point here, but since both Bria and Hobbie have had a go at my grammar today I won't try to teach anyone.  (Clue: it’s semantics more than syntax.)

It's all very strange to me but that's probably because I still live where my family originally comes from, approximately, I don't have to deal with it that much.

Just next time you claim to be from a country, think how the people who actually live there feel about it because you are robbing them of their identity.
