Well, the oscars of 2006 have been given out. Some surprises, but not that many. Biggest of course was the winner of the best film, which didn't go to Brokeback Mountain but to Crash. Is Crash the better movie or is the topic of BM still too controversial?
You can find the complete list of the winners and nominees here

Comments or thoughts anyone?

Maybe BM is another of those films people hype out of all proportion to the point where it can't win, not living up to expectations. Or just think will win because it covers issues.

Personally, I get tired of all these serious, gritty movies walking away with the best film awards *as I have to watch them* we take ourselves too seriously, really.

Bill and Ted should have won an Oscar for best film! :D

The Oscars . . who cares. Yesterday morning I was watching the breakfast news on BBC1 and ITV1 and both stations had live coverage from some after-show party . . .  reporters desperately trying to grab the attention of actors and actresses flouncing around. *l* I don't rate a film or an actor by Oscar wins . . . I watch it for myself and make my own mind up.

Regarding Brokeback Mountain, in this day and age it shouldn't be a controversy. It's a love story that happens to be about two men. Big deal! Is it a good movie or not? Do people enjoy it? That's what matters.

I really didn't care for the Oscars this year, the only reasons I wanted to watch it was because Jon Stewrat was the host and I think he is a great, if under-rated, comedian.

This is the Movie bit of the forum, so here the oscars do sort of matter. No I do not pick my movies by the amount of oscars they won either. However I always think it's it's fun to see what the people who think they know a lot about movies (emphasis on think here) decide to pick for best film of the year.
And regarding Brokeback Mountain, no it shouldn't be controversial. But maybe because a lot of members in the jury are over 50 they still think it is. I do not know for sure of course.
Another thing that bothered be was the best foreign film. It was won by South Africa, I assume it is a very good movie. However rumors are that Paradise Now didn't win because a lot of jews objected it. (For those who don't know, Paradise Now is about two Palastinians in their last days before a suicide bombing.) Not sure if this is true either, but I've seen PN and it's brilliant.

As for the red carpet crap, I couldn't care less. I care about the movies.

I think more time was wasted at the Oscars on montages telling the masses that going to the movies is fun and that we shouldn't wait for the film to come out on DVD.

Once Hollywood stops making crap films, and remakes of television shows (ie: "Bewitched", "Dukes of Hazzard", etc...) then maybe we'll go to the movies more instead of renting DVD's, downloading from the internet, or ordering them on pay-per-view on cable TV. Until that day comes, chances are you won't get my $8.00 for a ticket very often.

Of course if people would only shut up during a movie and turn off their mobile phones, pagers, etc... then I would possibly consider venturing out to a movie. Thankfully, a quirky local theatre here informs the crowd before every showing to 'turn your cell phone off, respect those around you and be quiet, or else we'll take your ass out' while showing a humorous situation in which an obnoxious patron is removed from existance.

Suppose I better stop here before I go off on a ranting tangent. :D

Quite right Tex, that's what a blog is for. ;)

I watched Dukes on a pirate DVD. It's the only time I have ever watched a pirate DVD, a housemate bought it . . .  I ended up being glad that I hadn't shelled any money out to watch it. It was just . . .  rubbish. That's all I can say about it!

Hollywood remakes are lazy and usually boring. A-Team? It'll be crap. Bewitched? It WAS crap (but then it was doomed to failure as no one could replace Elizabeth Montgomery.) Flintstones? Scooby Doo? Again, utter rubbish. Bilko . . .  Steve Martin should be buried in cement for making that. And of course now he's done Pink Panther. ANOTHER movie that won't see me waste my money.

Suggestion: try to watch something that hasn't been made by/in Hollywood.

Watch Kung Fu Hustle, it's damn brilliant!

QD

But make sure you watch it in the original language, not the awful dub.
