I'll try again!

I can't stand the industry that has built up around all manner of days. Valentines. Mothers Days. Fathers Day. Red Haired People Day. (Ok, I made that last one up - I think!;)  All to kill a few million trees, sell a load of tat, make people feel guilty for forgetting it . . . and giving people an excuse to make up for a year of ignoring people and taking them for granted, but hey! you can repent . . buy a card from Hallmark and hey presto, all is forgiven.

BLEH. We shouldn't need special days to tell the people we love how much they mean to us.

Oh . . . and PLEASE don't delete this one, eh. ;)

Awwww.  Jeremy's trying to say he loves us.  We love you too. :D

Personally, I'll take any excuse I can get to tell my closest friends that I love and appreciate them, albiet it won't always be obvious. My ways are mysterious and odd! Muwah.

Hey,

I agree that Hallmark and interflora are overdoing it on the holiday idea!

That being said I do like to remember Mothers day (U.K) as it is a very old holiday and of course I am far away from home.

That doesn't mean that I fall into a guilt trap, this year I hmm didn't send a card, but I did send flowers, I found a company that was donating £4.50 of the price of the flowers and then matching that with another £4.50 to go to Save the Children.  I thought that was pretty cool, I could show my Mum that I loved and missed her and support a good cause!

I also phoned home:D

Maybe your right, but who say's it's only these special Holidays that we say we ' love you & thank you ' ? Guilty peeps perhaps? Selfish?

Maybe some peeps need these day's to ' remember their Mum ' ' say sorry  ' and maybe even patch things up. I bet if you ask anyone who lost a Mum, that they would rather buy a bunch of flowers and a card on every Mother's day, than remembering past mothers days when they can't be with them.

I would buy the whole shop out and every flower going if I could just tell my Mum that I love her ..

I am one such person and I would rather NOT have an annual reminder courtesy Hallmark that I have no mum to buy for.

I'm sorry for your loss, and can understand why you don't want a reminder. I too have no Mum to buy for, but Anth does, although Anth's Mum would never replace mine, She deserves to have a card flowers and everything else a Mum should have on Mothers day, she is a wonderful Lady. Just because I can't buy for mine doesn't mean others can't buy for theirs.

I remember my Mum every day, and on Mothers day I remember her more, cry some laugh some and light a candle.

But you can say that for everything then can't you? Why have birthday Cards - only reminds you how old you are
sympathy - not gonna bring that person back
Congratulations on passing your driving test - although you night have a crash
Congratulations for getting a new job - although you might get redundant in a year or so
and the list goes on -

People get cards for that kind of thing? :? :o I'm missing out on at LEAST 5 cards.

Disclamer: I may or may not care if you do or do not care what I may or may not think. :P

Um...I only seriously loathe one holiday and it makes no sense to me why people try and make me enjoy it the way they do.  They don't know what's in my shoes or why my socks sag, etc etc.  When they try and give me a pep talk or make me perky about it without knowing my perspective, it makes them insensitive, arrogant and ignorant, despite good intentions - because half the time it's not actually about the day as it is about the connection to something else.  People who hate Valentines day don't hate loving people or being loved.  They hate having their noses rubbed in it.  Someone doesn't hate Mother's Day because it celebrates mothers...but because of a loss...a heart ache...a poked wound.  And it's true...I may occationally mutter bitterly about it around people who think it's lovely and perfect and wonderful. There is nothing I can do about the fact that every year there is paraphinalia all over the place - constant reminders of what day it is.  And really, the only joy I can get out of that day is making everyone else around me, who want me to like it, as miserable as I possibly can.  I say all that to say this.

People who like *insert day of choice* because they are the kind of people who see the positive in everything regardless - leave the rest of us alone. We may in fact need/want our misery more than we want your outlook on life.

People who loath *insert day of choice* for various reasons both valid and invalid - cut the optimists some slack, they honestly think they're doing you a favor.  In some odd way, they're trying to love you (I know it's weird). Instead, find some subtle way to needle them and over time turn them into cynical depressed pessimists who know better.

Oh yes - theirs cards for everything *l*

I agree, and I hope I didn't come across in my last post that I would ' force ' someone to like Mother day. I was trying to say - * If you don't like it, for what ever reason,  doesn't mean other's can't * Look at these day and tell me what's worth celebrating, and or sending cards for? I can't find anything.

I also don't like Remembrance Day, on the first of  November.  (Not on the 11th)-  It's where you go out to the cemetery and remember your loved once, leaving flowers and a lit candle. Sad that you have to have one of these days.

My mother is against Mother's Day because she says that being appreciated one day a year doesn't make much difference - either show it all the time, or never. Which makes sense to me.
I'm not a fan of these days, really, since a lot of it is just making money. I see the point in them, but half the time at least, the good seems to outweigh the bad. I mean, take Valentine's Day. If you have someone special, well and good. You shouldn't need an official day to buy them things or take them out to dinner. Any other day would do just as well. If you don't have someone special, then 99% of the time you feel bad about it, seeing everyone else with their significant other and being reminded that you have no one. I'd suggest balancing it out and having a Single's Day, too, but I have no idea how that'd work, and it'd just be another reason to spend money on crap.
To sum up - really, I don't care much about these days. I just ignore 'em. Let the kids have their fun if they want. :P

Do none of you understand capitalism?  It's very simple.

A strong economy makes everyone wealthier and happier.

An economy is strong when the money moves around faster.

These holidays are designed to make you spend your money and make it move.

This makes the economy stonger which makes everyone happy.

In summary, the more money you spend the richer and happier we all become.

I use Mothers day to give gifts to my Aunt and Grandma, not my mom, she get's things  when ever I see some thing she likes and I have money. I randomly give gifts to people I care about. The last time I gave my dad a gift on Fathers day was when I was still in middle school, I don't have to get him any thing to show I love him I just have to spend time with him and fight over the color of my hair that day.  :k  The only holidays I care about is my birthday and that was untill I was 13, now I can't stand it, and Christmas, when I get books and clothes!  Now Sweetest Day really needs to go away.
