More than three years after the last "Star Trek" movie crashed at the box office, the venerable sci-fi franchise is being revived by the director of the upcoming "Mission: Impossible" sequel, Daily Variety reported in its Friday edition.

The as-yet-untitled "Star Trek" feature, the 11th since 1979, is aiming for a fall 2008 release through Paramount Pictures, the Viacom Inc. unit looking to restore its box-office luster under new management, the trade paper said.

The project will be directed by J.J. Abrams, whose
Tom Cruise vehicle "Mission: Impossible III" will be released by Paramount on May 5. Abrams, famed for producing the TV shows "Alias" and "Lost," will also help write and produce.

Daily Variety said the action would center on the early days of "Star Trek" characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer-space mission.

The paper described "Star Trek" as Hollywood's most durable performer after James Bond, spawning 10 features that have grossed more than $1 billion and 726 TV episodes from six series.

The 10th film, "Star Trek: Nemesis," bombed at the box office on its December 2002 release, earning just $43 million in North America. Last year, Viacom-owned broadcast network UPN pulled the plug on the low-rated series "Star Trek: Enterprise" following a four-season run.

Dierna note: Oh great...so they're going for the Star Trek 90210? I've read the script outline of this and supposadly it was originally gonna be told from McCoy's POV. That's impossible now unless McCoy is CGI. :P

Should be a laugh a minute...

*scene*

Kirk: 'what did you do today?'

Spock: 'Hung out, studied logic, went to chemistry'

Kirk: 'nice'

*end scene*

I pity the poor kid who'll have to do a William Shatner.

Let's just wipe the slate clean and start afresh, like BSG did. You know, reinvent it for a new era. It could be an offshoot universe, like they haven't messed up the time-line often enough for that to happen.

basic precis of mine and Teek's idea:

25th century. Huge starship sent to neighbouring galaxy. Romulan captain. Ship has to explore suitable colony worlds before colny ships arrive in a few years time.

Why don't they just give up the ghost of ST-TOS and go forward.
ST uuniverse is so huge that they could come up with any premise and run with it.

Bleh!

Whatever JJ Abrams is involved in I'm gonna be a fan. Alias is my fave show, and Lost is right up there is as well. With someone like him in on it I look forward to this next film. And maybe the premise is a little predictable, but give it a chance. I bet if they ran with all new characters, people would be just as peeved. Fans are never happy! :P

Enough with the Prequels!

Couldn't anyone at Paramount take a hint with 'Enterprise' being cancelled, and "ST: Nemesis" not living up to usual Trek expectations? Fine. Make your movie...it'll go straight to DVD/Video since people aren't going to the movie theatres like they used to anyway.

The movie-makers need to focus less on the past of established sci-fi franchises and start taking things in new directions...

I'm not convinced that J.J. Abrams can pull it off either as the director. While 'Lost' is a great show, and 'Alias' used to be good, (ie: Seasons 1 & 2) I think Paramount won't give him enough creative freedom to take the film in a different direction. Maybe once I get around to seeing "Mission: Impossible 3" then we'll see, but I think Abrams will make Star Trek 11 more like the show "Felicity", only in space.

Here is a possible future: (Note: Everyone in a J.J. Abrams production usually greets each other by saying "hey!" or some derivative thereof.)

Kirk: "Hey!"
Spock: "Hey!"
Kirk: "I want... to ask...that hot Orion slave girl...out, but I don't know....how.
Spock: "Hmmm...fascinating. Perhaps the logical way would be for you to simply look at her, wait for cheesy music to play, then engage in kissing her."
Kirk: "You're brilliant Spock!"

Throw in some young adult angst, a mysterious island with a hatch in the ground, slap the Star Trek name on it and you've got Star Trek: 11. Sux0rz.

If Berman and Braga are even involved with this project, then forget it. Just give Trek a rest...
