I am writing this in the hope that I can stop at least one person from going through what I have gone through since Thursday night. This is long but please bear with me. My warning is this -
Please, please be extremely vigilant when you are out at a pub/club.

On Thursday night I was out with two friends at a pub I have been going to for many years. I had my drink spiked with a drug. I had a test done to find out what but the most common drugs used in drink spiking did not show up. The test was not run for LSD or Mushroom extract one of which the doctor believes may have been given to me.
I am very careful with where I keep my drink(s). They were never out of my sight, nor did someone else buy them for me. I can not prove how I was given the drugs, or what they were, nor who did it.
I was unable to sleep I had about 3 and a half hours sleep in total for 40 hours, all of which was broken. I would sleep for 20 mins, then wake up. Be awake for 30, sleep for 10 etc, etc. I had bouts of sweating without having a fever, feeling cold chills, tremors, bouts of tears for no reason, unreasonable irritation/anger, increased heart rate, blood pressure and mild hallucinations. It is something that I would not wish on anyone.
Thankfully though I remember everything and other then being given something nothing else happened to me. At first I didn’t even feel like there was something wrong with me. A nurse told me that her daughter had been drugged at the same pub and wound up in critical care. Her mother thought she was going to die. I am very very lucky.

I am almost fully recovered from this incident. But please everyone, especially all the women out there be careful. The following things are reminders of what you already know, but even they didn’t help me.

- Never leave your drink unattended or with people you don’t know and trust implicitly.

- Don’t accept drinks from strangers unless you see it poured in front of you.

- Always be aware of what the bartenders are doing with your drink.

- If you feel even slightly that something is wrong with you, tell your friends and don’t hesitate to go to the hospitaland get a pathology test done. It takes 24 hours but is more reliable then the strips they sometimes use.

Please take this warning to heart, and remind your friends and family. I hope none of you experience what I have gone through these last few days.

Sammy, I am sooooooooooo glad you're okay.  *hugs hugs and hugs* If anyone had hurt you, they'd pay :o I'd go down there and bust some heads.  And I hope your warning serves well to those who go clubbing and pubbing!  Always be safe!

Harmony, what a terrible experience. I hope the *expletives deleted* get what's coming to them somehow, someday. It is very big of you to come on here and pass on your warning, I hope everybody reads it and takes it to heart. I hope that your ordeal has left no lasting damage.

And the really sad thing is, everyone expects it to be some sleazy guy that has hit on you all night.  This is not the case however.  One friend was spiked by a barman, who she actually worked with, on her night off.  No one batted an eyelid when he took her home in a taxi.  Untill a year later when her court case was thrown out due to lack of evidence.  She had waited too long to go to the police, and the evidence was no longer reliable.  Unfortuantly he was later jailed, for another offence on another girl.  Again he spiked her drink while working.

The other one was spiked by a freind who wanted to see what would happen.  Luckly she knew what was haooening and knew enough to go home and sleep it off.

You really cant trust anyone.

Glad to hear you're alright now Harmony.

I had something similar happen to me last year, I was stood at the bar looking after my friends drinks while they were up dancing, I turned round to see where they were but kept my hand on my glass, although admittedly not over my glass as I perhaps should have done, as there was a bloke stood pretty close to me. My mates came back and we moved but after I'd finished that drink I felt weird and light-headed and I hadn't over-indulged as I hadn't drank that much. I ended up passing out near one of the other bars in the club, and I consider myself very lucky that I had a friend with me who wouldn't let me go home by myself. Apart from that, I don't remember much about it.

It really is important to keep an eye on your drinks, I see too many women round here that never bother  :(

A very similar thing happened to me a year ago.  A man I trusted completely put something in my drinks for the night.  After being friends for years, he was always there to make sure that sort of thing didn't happen to me when out.  Thankfully another friend of mine saw what was going on and called my boyfriend who was at the time a bouncer at a nearby club.  They got me home safe and sound eventually, but I was sick for nearly a week after, physically at least.  It took a long, long time for me to get over the betrayal of that and while he was never charged, he did have to move out of the city.. *l*

It's one of the reasons I rarely drink these days.  :)

Something else just occured to me.  In Scotland there is now a smoking ban in public places, which means if your out and want a smoke, you have to go outside of the bar or club.  I know a fair few folk that smoke, and many of them will end up being the only smoker on a night out.  I think it could be potentially dangerous to go outside a club on your own.  Not only are you leaving your drink, but if you have overindulged a bit, you know what happens when the fresh air hits you, the drink hits you harded.  Then there is the risks that usually accompny being alone on a street at night.  And when you do manage to get back inside safely, can you be sure your friends will be in the same place you left them?

Im not saying give up smoking, but what I am saying, is that if you are a smoker, or you do have a friend who smokes, make sure you go out in pairs, and let everyone else know where you are going.

Sam, I hope you started legal action against the bar in question.  If there's more than one witness, you may have a good case.

I'm glad nothing happened to you... that's awful!!  This may be a blessing in disguise too cuz it will make you more vigilant and it may allow you to help a lot of women.

Grrr@men.

tiamai - you should, however, give up smoking due to lung cancer, infection susceptibility, and death.  It's just not worth it... :)

It is scary to think about how many people this happens to. I am very lucky that whatever I was given was only a small amount. It could have ended up much worse.

Cam-Unfortunatley unless I know 100% who it was that slipped me the drugs, and can prove it, I can't press charges. However I have done a report so that in future if something like this happens again the information I gave them may help in establishing a history of drink spiking at the hotel. Here we cant sue a hotel without full proof and because whatever I was given didnt show up on the test, it wasnt something they commonly test for, I dont have a leg to stand on.

I am very vigilant when it somes to drinking and where my drink is. The even scarier part is the week before my friend and I were being bought drinks by a guy we met that night, and several times in the past I have been bought drinks by people I hardly know. You just cant be too careful.

What goes around, comes around I say. So it will hit them right in the backside 10 fold for what they did to you, and I'm really sorry to hear this news. I wish you all the best and the best of luck with the results and future. :)

Hehe, thinking about that...

We just had a lecture on predisposition to cancer... Apparently, smoking and drinking are confounding with respect to lung cancer risk factor.  The risk factor:

Smoking only: 5x increase
Alcohol only: 18x increase
Smoking + alcohol: 44x increase

aka... pubs are evil. :P

you guys are very lucky indeed that you weren't hurt by the drug serioulsy, my Sister had a friend whose drink was spiked with some drug, she went home with one of the band members (it was a local band member) Needless to say the next day my sister received they call that her friend was in critical condition at the hospital.  she had been raped and beaten. The guy ended up getting 10 years in prison.

And stories like this make me glad I've stopped partying and reluctant to return to that lifestyle....no matter how much fun it seemed at the time.

There have been two times that I have suspected that someone had slipped me something.  I was naive and when you walk into a pub/club/bar and a thousand guys are lined up begging to buy you a drink, you occassionally give in.  Loud music, the atmosphere, people swarming around you...you tend to lose your rationality.  A warning to young women who are lured by the party scene....what hapened to Harmony happens to many people across the world.  Even when you play by all the rules, have people you trust watching your back, you still are never 100% safe in that environment.

Harmony, I'm glad you're okay.

Glad you're OK sammy... A similar thing happened to a friend of mine... You surely can't trust barmen. Apart from dugs in drinks, there are now those unpure mixed drinks which in my country we call "bombs" and can sometimes cause death. People should be really careful about what they drink and where they drink it... So always watch what the barman is doing to your drink  ;)

I have heard too many stories such as this from people I know.
I don't consume alcohol in public. I buy my liquor in bulk, enjoy it in the privacy of my own home where I have total controll as to the contents.
On the rare occassions I do go out, I stick to rum and cokes, hold the rum.
