What do you think of themed weekends in TF?  After the Matrix April Fools event a few months ago, we noticed the chat was quite busy, so the OZD decided to run a few more themed weekends in TF with chattops and new avatars to encourage people into the chatrooms.  Afterall, that's what 10F started out as and continues to be focussed as.  What are your thoughts?

I know some people think that Tenforward is a Star Trek chatroom so it should be strictly Star Trek themed.  Which is fine, that's one opinon.  Another is that it's a good idea to spice things up every now and then with a change, which is what we're trying out now with the Lost themed weekend.  Also, if you do like the idea of themed weekends, feel free to throw out some suggestions!  Regardless, if we do decide to go ahead with themed weekends in TF, they'll only be held every few months.

Comments welcome!

Speaking as a former Trek Sector Wotsit, I definteily give this the big thumbs up! The frequency needs to be be carefully judged so as not to overdo it but special events like this are fun and create a buzz. Every few months? Once every two months seems a good frequency to me.

Please please please can we have a Doctor Who theme sometime? I can do you avatars! Please?

:o I get Stargate before you get Dr. Who!

Anyway, I'm okay with the random room themes, but yeah, too often will get boring quick and annoying.  I'd say every three months, personally.

I also selected mutany up there, but I didn't realize it was connected to the themed weekend thi ng.  I just saw, Man in Hat, Muntany, and followed.

Lost should go get lost. :o  :o  :o

And no, I don't want any different chattops. If people want a themed chat, just rebuild D'Deridex and Rotarran into a Lost, or Alias, or some other cult favourite.

Nobody should have to force anything on us, but at the same time, don't harm Star Trek by taking away the first chat of 10F, that's just WRONG.

They're only for a few days at a time.  Are you saying you can't live 2 whole days without the normal chat layout?  It's not like they'll be having this every weekend either.  Change can be good for a while.

And, if you really don't like it, stay out of the chats for the weekend. It's good for your health, too. ;)

"Thou shall not live by Trek alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of Iain."

..That is, good job OZD! I rather like the theme weekends myself. Best to mix things up once and awhile, keeps things interesting. Two months seems like a good interval to me, also.

P.S: I voted for the first choice, but I would like to give my full support for the last option as well.

I picked the "mutiny" option, and would like to publically declare my intent to rally all of Outpost Ten Forward in a coup to overthrow Brady, with me as leader of this insurgent force.

... hi Brady! :D

Also, I agree with the first option too.

Cheers! :)

I like the idea. However, I ask that you please don't get Shane to make the chat top again, ever... he's got us all staring at it for hours now. :(

But seriously, every few months, I think it should be good! As long as ye don't overdo it, 'cause that'd take away the sparkle. Or whatever. You know what I mean! :(

Svenja, give up! You'll never find them all! :(

Also, I chose option 1. I like changing things up... and so do the majority of people, I think. :)

Er, I'd just like to say, don't jump all over the people who don't like it.  You like it.  They don't.  It's not like they've announced that they hate OTF and declared war on those who have made the new chat interface.  Let those who like it express their opinion and those who don't express theirs.  Otherwise, there's no point in asking what we think.

I know  I'M going to get tired of the themed weekends REAL fast if they're too often.  Even now I'm like "Didn't we just have one?"

However, I can be bribed with Stargate. Lots and lots of Stargate.

Who doesn't like them? I'll kill them? :k :D *j/k*

Svenja's just giving out coz she can't find my hidden Alias markings in the Lost chat-top. I was sneaky. :k So, now people are spending time trying to find them. It was my homage to Alias series finale :(... :D

SG, lovin' it!

I'm just disturbed that "selection" is spelled wrong.  Maybe it's an inside joke and I'm outside of the loop... but yeah.  Selection.

I think these types of special weekends are good if they aren't over-done, but I don't understand why they're always in Ten Forward. The purpose for it is a Star Trek chatroom, like CCC for Star Wars and MT for Fantasy...why not use D'Deridex or Rotarran for these special weekends? If the goal is to get more people into chat, it may also work to boost people to visit the "neglected" rooms.

Dunno if it makes much sense, but that's my thought.

Ahoy!

Thanks for all the feedback.  I'm slightly alarmed, yet only moderately suprised at the votes towards overthrowing me.  Luckily it seems that Iain has volunteered to lead the mutiny, which means it is doomed to fail.  I've just heard that Man in Hat is planning on drilling a hole up into Iain's quarters of Deck 4 and invading with a borrowed Rancor.  See the next issue of the Blue Report for more information on this development.  On to semi-serious stuff though...

Some good points made!  Obviously we can never make everyone happy, but with feedback like this we can have a shot at pleasing the majority.  We'll probably have another themed weekend two or three months down the track and we'll look at having it in the 'Dex or Rot.  The OZD will discuss our next themed weekend when it gets closer, and we'll review the suggestions.  So far we've got Dr. Who and Stargate, and I think CT wanted a My Little Pony theme at some point so we'll look into that too.  I also had a recent meeting in Vancouver with Andrew and Jesse over beers and burgers, and we concluded that comic book remakes like X-Men, Superman and Spiderman are the future, so we may also be looking at ditching the whole sci-fi theme all together and reinventing the Outpost with a Charlie Brown theme.  That is still under discussion though.

Thanks everyone!  If anyone else has ideas or comments, throw them up here or swing me an email.

Actually, Iain may be leading the revolt but I have a keen eye for seeing the holes in all his plans. *nods* Therefore, with me scrutinizing all the plans and exposing problem areas, we can comprise a fool proof plan to over throw you.  There may be poisoned muffins involved.

However, I can be bought and bribed with a permanent Stargate themed room.  I just thought I'd mention that in case it wasn't clear.

You're misunderstanding my point back on Page One.

If you get to keep the CCC for Star Wars; why can't we keep TF for Trek? That's all it boils down to. Why must we suffer so you can romp around in a place that you enjoy? What happened to allowing the TFers a place where we can enjoy?

That is my question. I'm not in principle against theme days. But I feel you shouldn't rob TF of what makes TF great and that is TF itself.

Ah, but who said there would be no themed weekends in the CCC?

There are no plans at this stage but I think it's a great idea, and I don't see the harm in venturing away from the chatroom's "regular" genre for a few days every few months. If the people and hats in charge of the ST side of OTF want to take turns, I'm sure we'd be interested. ;)

*eyes Hobbie from across the table*  Maybe my people will send a note to your people, and then we can meet in a secret location and discuss these plans.  Hopefully it won't be an ambush by the Wizards though - I know they're up to something lately.  :o

Quincy - I don't see it as "ruining a chatroom", actually, I think some variety every once in a while can have quite a positive effect. Plus I'm not really sure that people would visit the Deridex and Rot even if we give out free promotions to those who do.

Brady - Yes, we shouldn't underestimate their resourcefulness. What we could do is invite them along, that way we could ambush the both of you and put our puppets in charge, like Iain. [insert evil laugh here] be sure that the meeting is safe.

It's not like the normal avatars weren't still there. Stick in an option *I'm sure Iain can do it* to pick which chat top you see during the event and it's all roses and pixels, really.

how about rotating where each themed weekend is held? Like one weekend it be in Tenfoward, the Next CCC, then D'D then the Rot, that way they all get their chance and people can log in if they want, and if they don't then they don't have to...

I see nothing wrong with the weekends, noone forces you to log in to the chat when the event is going on and there are other Trek related rooms you can go to if you don't want to support the event. I think saying No to changes is a bad thing. I was at first against all the changes too, but once you accept them and jojn in with them it can be a lot of fun, besides it's not like they are taking away Trek all togethere they are just adding a little fun to the room something besides just Trivia. You'd be surpised at the work that has to go into making sure everything gets done for the events. i think a little curties to those who did the hard work is in order, not just saying no right away. Okay i'm done with my rant and will let you all go now :P
