DOCTORS and nurses are to wear Star Trek style gadgets to talk to each other. The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust is to become the first UK hospital to enable staff to contact each other instantly through a voice-activated, wearable ‘badge’

The tiny lapel fobs are dead ringers for the Combadges used by characters in the TV series.

The hands-free device, supplied by California-based Vocera Communications, weighs less than two ounces and operates on a wireless LAN. By simply saying a person’s name or department, users are automatically connected to the appropriate person and can speak to them as if they were using a phone.
Unlike mobile phones they do not interfere with hospital equipment.

Steve Wells, for the new BT Vocera system, said: "This is trailblazing technology." Medics in Truro, Cornwall, are piloting the scheme, set to go nationwide.
