I'm editing this first post rather than starting a new topic. This is due to the fact that we are now building an OTF'ers Choice game. Any memeber can put forward his or her's favourite character to be included in the game. There are 36 characters in the game, so plenty of room left. Feel free to suggest 2 or 3 characters from the world of 2D fighters, manga, comic books, or console games.

I'm sad to say from what i'm hearing we may be nearing the the end of new 2D fighting games. Capcom, God's of 2d fighters, say they have no plans to make any. It's been a while since one was released aswell.

It's not suprising 2D games may be on the way out. I've been playing Dead Or Alive Ultimate on my X-Box recently, and it is amazing, and stunning. DOA 4 on the X-Box 360 is just beyond belief. But, i'm nostalgic when it comes to video gaming. Whatever comes out to take my breath away nowadays will never make me think good old fashioned 2D games are to be consigned to the bin.

For a little while now i've been working on my own 2D fighting game ( you know, the Street Fighter type ). I'm a huge fan of Streetfighter in the arcade and on consoles, other 2D fighters too, like Killer Instinct and Mortal Kombat. I have a long list of favourite characters from all fighting games. So, i'm putting all of them into one big game!

I'm using the M.U.G.E.N game engine to create my game ( which is available to download if you Google. ). Then adding sprites of my favourite characters. I own all this material, i'm just adapting it for my own use. Re-mixing my games if you like. Or using fan created sprites available online. So, if you like what you see here, sorry, but  i cant distribute this game. It would violate several thousand copyrights *L*

A couple of screenshots from my game.

I'm hoping to have around 300 of my favourite characters from every 2d fighter i own in the completed game.

It is a shame that sprite based games are totally giving way to 3d. You only have to look at the superb Nintendo GBA to see there are still amazing 2d games being made. Why can't we have a new 2d Mario or Sonic game on a console? The GBA games are great!

300 Characters, you don't think small do you anth.

In any case, I thought you would be allowed to distribute the game as long as you didn't make a profit on it.  But all that legal mumbo jumbo is not my strong point so i'll trust you on this.

Seele - 300...what's wrong with that!? :P You've not lived unless you try the survival mode! ( i think by the time i have all 300 in, it could be quite a literal survival mode! )*L* I shall look into that legal stuff. I'd be less careful, but the Outpost would be involved. There will certainly not be any money involved in any distribution. It probably is against copyright still though.

What you say is certainly the case with the Star Wars fan film i'm involved in. George Lucas does not mind at all if fans make Star Wars films and distribute them. As long as no money changes hands at all. Not even to recover costs to break even. I also know Nintendo have a simular opinion to Lucas. That fan made stuff using their characters / universe, or  whatever is a huge form flattery and only serves to promote their brand.

at present the game is around 1GB and i have about 150 characters in, 150 to add. So, it may be a little big to put online for download.

It would be quite easy to put together a "normal" or "sane" sized game though :P and then pass it on to people here. I have a large selection of characters, Marvel, streetfighter, King of Fighters, etc. I even have some familiar console characters like Mario, DK and Sonic. So, the game could be made up of characters chosen right here.

The game has alot of modes. Arcade, Versus, team Versus, Tag, 1 and 2 player support. Four characters can fight onscreen at the same time aswell! Also Joysticks or game pads are very easy to configure for it.

Ask away anybody, and i'll tell you if i have the Character you like. I will not post a link to any download here, just to be on the safe side. I'll just say e-mail me for a link when the game is completed. :)

How did the game get to be 1gb?

In any case, the only character I want is Spidey.  Best. Hero. Ever.

I have a cool spidey from Marvel V's Capcom!

I was suprised at that 1GB folder size too ( btw it's now 1.6GB after some more additions! *LOL* ). But, i do have alot of stages, intros, other screens. Then the folder for each character in the game has MP3's for music, character voices etc. 75% of the size is in the character folder, about 25% in the stages folder.

I can't run with zipped or compressed files. Which i'm guessing the pro's do. That really bumps it up.

Ok, so we have Spidey in our OTF choice game! ( I'm tempted to say say Wolverine, but i'm hoping somebody else will, that way i get another favourite of mine in, so i'm holding back for now :P. ) Now this is where things will dry up i guess. Unless this forum gets some more supporters, which it should!

And Hong Kong Phooey

QD : Trust you! :P I don't have Firestar. Have Pheonix, and some other X-Men. A whole load of other Marvel characters too. Plus a few DC peeps.

I'm afraid youre out of luck with Hong Kong Phooey too. Although i did track down a Captain Caveman! :D But, it would rock if Hong Kong Phooey was in it! That was one of my favourites when i was a kid ( still am a kid, i mean a younger one. )

One of the coolest characters i found is the girl from the Ring! She climbs out of a TV at the start of the fight. Then does that weird crawling around the floor! *L*

For me though, the holy grail of 2d Fighting games would be to have G-Force in it! Battle of the Planets! Now that was a show!

So, i'm gonna need another couple of choices from you. :)

Okay, how about Wolfsbane from X-factor and ooh, Kymaera (Namorita in the blue version) and... and Parsley the Lion from the Herbs! :?  I'm just reeling my childhood off, here :D  How about the Crow, or She-Ra (she's cooler than He-Man)

Not going to be able to get those characters. :P

Try thinking more mainstream. *L*

The problem is, the guys that are into this stuff hate sharing characters. Until you fully enter into their community and contribute some yourself. So, its kind of a closed group. I think thats bad, cos how are you meant to get interested or get involved if nobody will help get you started?

I've only got mine cos some guy felt this stuff was too cool to not see the light of day, and made it available for download.

Yes! I just got Sailor Moon, and those other sailor's, Mars and Jupiter, Neptune etc. :)

Daleks would be awesome! But, i'm not confident though. :(

So, anybody else want to choose some characters? We're making a OTF'ers choice 2D Fighting game just to re-cap. You can choose your favourite characters from Manga, other fighting games, Consoles, Cartoons, Marvel and DC comics etc.

At the moment we have....

Wolverine
Spiderman
Sailor Moon
Some other Japanese Sailor's maybe :P

I've planned out the game screens. It is looking cool!

here's one shot....

There is room for 36 characters. That's about twice as big as the everage Streetfighter game. So, plenty of room for more characters. :)

Is that "Ryo" Ferdinand? :P

I've got him about 20 times from various games.

The Zelda character is one of the best.

Great choices.

I'm adding Chun Li, from Street Fighter Alpha 3 to my list aswell.

So far.....

Wolverine ( Marvel V's Capcom ).
Spiderman ( Marvel V's capcom ).
Ryo ( Street Fighter Alpha 3 ).
Chun Li ( Street Fighter Alpha 3 ).
Link ( From Zelda. )
Sailor Moon.
Sailor Venus. ( eye candy! :P )

Only another 30 to go!

I think you have the names wrong there anth, Zelda is the princess in the Zelda games and Link is the hero we play as.  I was going to suggest Samus but with Smash brothers coming out in a few months on the Wii I can wait until then.

30 more characters hey... You could always have Venom to counter Spidey.

Seele : I phrased that wrong, i meant the character that features in Zelda. Was playing with Link all weekend in my custom fighting game. That's a good choice by Neo.

I have a fantastic Venom. SO.... he's in! :)

Any objections to putting in some X-Men?

Okay, Ken and Akuma are in.

The sprites from Street Fighter Alpha 3 look amazing. I'm using those for the game.

Just been playing the game as it stands right now. It is very playable too! Not that easy either. I got my ass kicked by Sailor Mercury :S

Here's a screenshot of what the character select screen looks like.

Any ideas for the name of the game? Marvel V's Capcom V's Sailor Moon V's Nintendo, is a bit long winded. Plus there's more to come! :P

One cool bit of news i found out is, some guys are working on a version of M.U.G.E.N ( the fighting engine i'm designing the game around here ) which supports online play!

No word on when that will be out. But, it could be alot of fun.

Woohoo for a cool Link then, Makes me wish I had soul caliber 2... but my bro has it at his house.

Anyway, I was thinking anth, I'm not sure how your game works but is it possible to allow people to download the game and then download only specific characters they want instead of you having to ask for suggestions??  I figure this is probably impossible but might help you reduce the size of the game.

In any case, Spidey and Link are the only characters I need to play.

Seele : It would be very easy to do that. It's exactly how i got started. We would be probably looking at a 200MB plus download. So this may be the best way to do it.

If anybody apart from myself, Seele, Neo, and QD are reading this. :P and you'd still like the full 200MB plus game, then post here. Otherwise, you can build your own following the advice below. :)

It took me about an hour or so to read a few tutorials and instructions on putting a game together. It's basically no harder than editing some text files, to change the code of the game to include your modifications.

You basically begin with a blank slate. Then change to suit your needs and the add characters you like.

From experiance though, the MUGEN community is quite closed. We as purely players, would be referred to as "leechers" and would not expect much help from anybody who knows alot about this stuff or has alot of characters.

They tend to only share among themselves too. You can Google and find some nice characters by typing in "mugen chars" or something simular. There's a few sites where you can download characters, stages, and even complete replica and original screenpacks to alter the look of the game. You will come across alot of dead links though.

I have a large collection of characters and could share if anybody was interested in putting there own game together and had trouble finding certain sprites for their game.

Making your 2D Fighter - Getting Started

Here's your blank slate. MUGEN for Windows. Download the top option.

http://unofficial-winmugen.jpn.org/

If you can't be bothered to read how to add characters or anything else. I can edit a text file and you simply have to drop it into the correct folder, and add characters or stages to the "chars" or "stages" folder.

Step 1. Download and unzip the above software.
Step 2. Google ( or ask me ) for "mugen characters" and "mugen stages"
Step 3. Read the instructions in the directory you unzipped ( or just ask me here. )

MUGEN beginners guide.

http://www.mugenfury.com/tutorials/aides/help.htm#1

Useful Download Site

http://translate.google.com/transla....&u=http

Warning! Be prepared for alot of dead links when browsing for characters and stages. Also, alot of characters which just don't work. Add elements one at a time to your game. Then test. If you add hundreds of elements and it keeps crashing, you'll have big problems finding out just which item is causing the crash.

Just to wet Seele's appetite......

Call it the, 'Global Character smack-down' :D

Yay for the sailor scouts :D  Try for some of the folk from Fushigi yugi, or maybe Shampoo from Ranma :D  I can't wait to play this, and also get my behind kicked by sailor mercury :D

QD : I did find some Ramna, but they looked terrible, and there was no Shampoo. ( if i sound like i know what i'm talking about...It's sheer luck, cos i don't! :P )

I'm just going to go ahead and put some what i consider to be good characters in now. Finish the game. Then upload it. Then post the download link here. The game is very easily edited. However, as i explained earlier the sites that host characters and stages are littered with broken links, so at least this game will give somebody a good starting point.

If anybody wants to edit, build on it, etc they can.

I'm not so keen that i would design my own characters and stages, but there is software out there ( quite complicated software i believe ) to make and design your own. I'm happy playing and compiling games for fun.

But, i can see MUGEN making an excellent hobby for somebody artistic in nature. If anybody can draw in the anime style it would be amazing to see your work in a game you can easily put together yourself.

So, hopefully, the game will be available for download in the next 2 days. :)

I'll be around here to answer any questions anybody might have on building on it or starting fresh.

Ok, here it is. Finished! :)

OTF Choice - World Warrior

Game Characters :
Thor.
Dr Doom.
The Hulk.                        Gambit.
SabreTooth.                    Magneto.
IronMan.                         Ken.
Captain America.             Akuma.
SpiderMan.                      Ryu.
Venom.                           Cammy.
Wolverine.                       Chun Li.
Cyclops.                          Spawn.
Phoenix.                          RoboCop.
Rogue.                            Predator.
IceMan.                           The Flash.
Storm.                            Batman.
Superman.                      Wonder Woman.
Sailor Moon.                    Sailor Mars.
Sailor Jupiter.                  Sailor Mercury.
Sailor Venus.                   Darth Maul.
Super Mario.                    Link ( From Zelda. )

I've zipped up the game using "winrar". This was to bring the size down as much as possible. If you don't have "Winrar" on your pc, you can down it here....

http://www.win-rar.com/download.html

Once you have Winrar, right click on the downloaded game and "extract".

You can download the game here.....

( see page 4 of topic )

It is hosted at "Yousendit.com" it will be there for 7 days or 100 downloads. It's a free hosting site. So, if you come to this topic late, and find a dead link, please request another upload of the game.

Once downloaded, and unzipped, enter the folder, and click on "OTF Choice - World Warrior" .exe to start the game. You'll see plenty of choices in the game menu. Including "Options". There you can define your own keyboard buttons, or configure your gamepad/joystick. You can also set the game speed, and skill level.

Cover Art

The Game is called OTF Choice - World Warriors. I've made some cover art which you can click on below. You can then save and print off a DVD/CD cover.

For the most part the game runs well. Hopefully i've removed any bad files that may make the game crash. There may be some still hanging on though. *L* Just post here with any problems. The game should run on most PC's requiring only a 200mhz processor ( the faster your PC the better though. )

It's probably best to just have the game running and nothing else. This will give you adequate memory and pc resources.

Have fun. I worked hard putting this all together. But, it will be well worth it if somebody else other than myself gets some enjoyment out of it too.

It can also serve as a great "starter pack" for your own Mugen fighting game project. You can easily add your own choice of characters. Just read back through the topic here for instructions.

Have fun! :)

It's quite funny to see a little petite girl in a Sailor suit kick the hell out Wolverine though, i laugh every time they pick him up, swing him around their heads and throw him across the screen. :P

Tell you what, this game has shown up the shortfalls in my game pad design. My thumbs are raw! :(

I blame Sailor Mercury and QD for my aching thumbs. :P

This time I downloaded it without anything else downloading at the same time and got it quick smart.

Nice game, but Woah, Mario just kicked my butt as Spidey.  First punch I made but after that i'm on the receiving end of a constant barrage.

I also played as Link and made it through one match but then I got those Sailor's and promptly lost.

Anyway back to it, see if I can learn some more moves and win a few rounds.

QD : I could try to upload a non compressed one, or maybe just a regular windows zip for you? Let me know what you'd rather have.

Seele : I think the Mario character is random. Sometimes he's awesome, as a kind of metal Mario, other times he's beatable. You seen him in the Matrix form yet? That's cool. *L*

So, it's not just me that has problems with those sailor's!
