To be honest, as an Englishman it annoys me that the Scots have their Parliment, the Welsh have their Assembley and we have nothing. It seems that to express a pride in being English is some sort of crime, something to be ashamed of these days. For example, there have been complaints about the use of the English flag, with various people claiming it is racist  - well at times like the world cup it is reclaimed from the right-wing nazis BY the people - and I have even seen complaints based upon it being a reminder of the Crusades!!!

I don't want to start a political debate - I just want to say that while I am not right-wing, or a nationalist, or some jingoistic moron, I am  very proud of my country and of being English! Hell . . yesterday I was wlaking round Walthamstow with a big St. George's flag tied round me like a cape ;)

*LOL* Nice!  ;)

Anyway, it doesn't annoy me that the Scottish have their pariament and that the Welsh have their Assembley, but what does annoy me is this... English MP's are not allowed to meddle in the affairs of the Scottish Parliament but the English Parliament is dominated by those that are Scottish.

Surely it should be a mutual thing, right? I'm not being anti-Scottish i just think that it makes no sense what so ever. I'm sure that FM shall have something to say on the matter.  :P

Ok instead of picking a fight here (it would be so easy) I'm going to try to be civil (a monumental day in the history of Nicoll).

Re: Scottish Parliament

First off can I say that the majority of Scots I know hate the Scottish parliament and wish it was never established.  Most of these are people that wanted it in the first place but then changed their minds.

Even though I don't like the Scottish parliament there is a pretty good argument for why we should have it.  Basically Scotland has its own law which is different from that in England.  Before the Scottish parliament Scots law had no democratic control.  This is obviously a bad situation that needed to be changed.

Secondly the Scottish parliament has very little real power and almost all important decisions which affect the people of Scotland are made in Westminster.

I concede that the MPs for Scottish constituencies should abstain from any vote which does not directly affect the people of Scotland but that's something you have to take up with them individually.  That's a problem caused by somewhat flexible ethics of the individuals in government and their superiors within their respective parties

Re: Scots in charge

Ok my first reaction here is to point out that to a large degree the entire history of the British Empire is full of Scots in important positions.  But really that's just a petty argument devised to irritate the English.

A better argument might be that the government you are criticizing is in fact the government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and it would be completely undemocratic to attempt to restrict who could form that government.

Re: Offensive Englishness

OK I admit it, I'm Scottish, I love to see England do badly.  But I'm never going to try and stop English people from waving their flags and supporting their team.

What I do find offensive is the English people who think that being patriotic is shaving your head, singing fascist songs, throwing bottles and fighting with innocent foreigners.  But I'm sure most English people find that just as offensive as I do.

I refuse to talk football as that will start an argument.

Hmm

Let me just say I agree with Nicoll and Babel, I would never consider those people patriots and think that they should be stripped of citzenship and found an empty island where we can put a big sign up saying danger idiots live here!

I have a little english flag that some friends brought me and
I have a picture of some of the English football players at the cafe; after all I run it and I can put what I want there!

(also china is not playing so I am safe)

I am english and irish and proud of both!
