Confirming rumors that have been flying around for months, BBC Wales has issued a press release today that Billie Piper will be leaving her role as Rose Tyler at the end of the current series. "Billie Piper who has played Rose Tyler, the feisty young companion of both the ninth and tenth doctors, will leave Doctor Who in a nail biting series two finale. Over the past two years Rose has been on an adventure of a lifetime, travelling across the galaxy with the Doctor. She's visited far-off futuristic cities in the year five billion and beyond; landed on space stations where she's been a contestant in a deadly version of ‘The Weakest Link'; travelled back in time and met Queen Victoria, Charles Dickens, Madame de Pompadour and her dead father; she has battled against the Doctor's deadliest foes the Daleks and Cybermen; taken on Slitheen, Sycorax and Krillitanes and survived the end of the world and the blitz. Now, in what is set to be the TARDIS's most terrifying adventure, The Doctor and Rose will face their biggest challenge to date. Back on Earth the human race rejoices as the ghosts of loved ones return home. But as the Doctor, Rose and Jackie investigate Torchwood Tower, a trap is being sprung; an almighty invasion is being put into motion which is set to destroy the whole of modern-day Earth."

To be brutally honest I'm kinda glad. For one thing, it ends the speculation and, for another, I never really warmed to her deep down in my heart. I think I'm still scarred by her debut single, titled- *meh, meh, meh, meh* and lately it's all Rose with her mascara overload and less Doctor. She fitted with CE, but somehow, not so much with DT.

Maybe it's just me.
Maybe it's that pink puffy she wears.

I have to say I quite liked her in the last two eps, she was written well, and acted well... but in the ones before that, my feelings for Rose got steadily worse. I'm curious to see what'll happen, though!

What to say, what to say... I'll go with my current thoughts: Superb acting; average characters, glimpses of greatness... But I still would take Classic Series overall any day. There are some truly outstanding all time great episodes, with the acting by Chris and Rose showing superb calibre: Dalek (my second favourite of all time); Father's Day; and The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances.

She didn't contribute much to the show and frankly, the whole Bad Wolf concept was a cheap cop-out, reminiscent of the whole Star Trek like "five minutes to the end and we need a solution".

Was Billie a good choice for companion? Quite probably. Will she be remembered fondly in the role? Quite. Will she ever rank amongst my favourite companions? No.

Jackie is the really big downpoint for me. :D

Rose became increasingly smug, bitchy and irritating as the second series wore on, though she did come out well from the last two-parter. I think the timing is right, the character has run the course. Looking forward to the season finale!

Haven't we come back full circle? When Series One was announced, as in going into production, I noted that the Doctor needed a foil. Much like how the Doctor had Romana (both of her). Why? The Doctor doesn't need some "classic" female companion.

I've said that each generation (ie Doctor) in the show was more or less in line with that era, or roughly so, at least with companions:
 • First had the young teenager trying to find her place in the world; with two adults trying to look out for the young and old alike, being the reason, or showing how even adults can mess up
 • Second started off the fact that the generations shouldn't be against each other, that young and older alike could count on each other and it was a mutual respect
 • Third brought in colour and in turn, three different women: The smarts; the one trying to find her place; and the woman who could handle herself
 • Fourth brought in Romana, who was very much a match for the Doctor (pun intended), who showed that men and women could work with each other
 • Fifth brought us an ensemble, again with teamwork, but how we need to play our roles. Someone has to be the boss and prop up the Doctor
 • Sixth... Well, despite the clash of personalities (battle of the sexes?), things got done as both Sixth and Peri tried to find their role in existence
 • Seventh had the adult playing the role of mentor, someone to oversee things, with the teenagers breaking out of the mould and trying to assert themselves
 • Eighth brought us the era of the career professional. Again, much like Fourth/Romana, here was a relationship of equals, founded on respect
 • Ninth brought us into the new millenium. Two people who were independent, different and yet the same who could think for themselves.
So what went wrong? Rose (the character) got a good ovation from me in Rose (the episode) when she took the initiative to save the Doctor from the Auton intelligence. She wasn't a macho-esque character, she was this ordinary girl who stepped up to the plate to save the day.

We lost that as time went on. She didn't like... I don't even know how to put it. Let me try it this way. The show is about the Doctor, with a companion. While I do agree that the companion should be an equal, they should be supporting one another, not vying for top honours.

Let me put it yet another way (Series One only!): Rose: 3, Doctor: 1!

Rose's score:
 • Rose saves the day in Rose
 • Rose convinces her father to sacrifice himself in Father's Day
 • Rose's "Bad Wolf" saves the universe in Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways
The Doctor's score:
 • The Doctor defeats the Jagrafess in The Long Game
The tied/null scores:
 • The Doctor saves Rose in The End of the World (conceded), but he didn't stop Cassandra in time to save the other candidates, nor does he save the world
 • Gwyneth stalls the Gelth long enough for Charles Dickens to blow them up in The Unquiet Dead
 • The Dalek destroyed itself in Dalek
 • MICKEY saves the day with the missile in Aliens of London/World War Three
 • Nancy saves the day by reprogramming the nanogenes, which are helped along by the Doctor in The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances
 • Margaret Slitheen or if you prefer, the TARDIS itself saves the day in Boom Town
End result? Rose, great, the Doctor...? Useless! Zero! Nil points!

Let's face it. The show needs a new Romana-esque character. Someone who's more effective than the Doctor. :P

Anyone care to take opposing council? :P

Hmmm... Thinking about this, you're right - this Doctor is a lot more immature, apparently, than the previous one(s), various "I'm so old"'s or not. What he'd need is an older, or at least a more mature, companion - which is why School Reunion worked so beautifully. Someone to earth his happy-floatig personality, pardon the pun.

I haven't seen School Reunion... :(

But honestly, do we need a Companion? Why must it that we give in to the ratings by having this young girl that will enhance the romance factor? Why not have a male character and no, I'm not talking Captain Jack or Mickey...

Like how about the Master? A Doctor/Master combination, a la Scream of the Shalka worked fine. Similarly, an Ian Chesterton; Professor Litefoot/Henry Gordon Jago (The Talons of Weng Chiang); even the Brigadier, or Sergeant Benton or a Mike Yates type character.

I've found Rose to be increasingly irritating in this series, she wasn't too bad in the last couple of episodes. I'd quite like to see a new companion come in

Maybe someone should tell the Beeb that Doctor Who has enough of a "squee"-factor without there having to neccessarily be a female audience identification figure. Personally, I'd have nothing against a male companion, or a second Time Lord / Lady (hey, it worked with Romana), or an alien from the planet Ushuquamflag'hn (though it would have to be an easy make-up job).

But, whatever they do, please let it be a character who can have issues - but who can also work through them in less than two seasons.

I think it would be a great recurring theme. After all Seventh/Ace worked as a great combination. It's a shame the show ended just as they were hitting their stride.

I think the big problem is the audience in a roundabout way. We need a companion so that the Doctor can explain to them and thus us, what's going on. Similarly, the Doctor is just so fixed that he would just not get too fussed, while the companion would scream, get captured, have to be rescued etc

I think Jack/Rose worked out pretty well, but it tended to isolate the Doctor. Or rather, Ninth/Jack/Rose worked, but isolated one of them into standing there and doing nothing status, particularly in The Parting of the Ways.

So I don't know. We've got some pretty big holes as far as a solid pairing goes. Ninth and Rose wasn't really that great a success, not really in hindsight. He just acted too old and while there's a bond, it's not really... I can't quantify it. It wasn't a friendship. He's lonely, but he never reached out and connected.
