With the smash success of the "Re-Imagining" of Battlestar Galactica, I think J. Michael Straczynski and Bryce Zabel's idea of "Re-Booting" Star Trek is fantastic.

If you don't know what I am talking about you can read the entire proposal Here:

http://bztv.typepad.com/newsviews/files/ST2004Reboot.pdf

READ IT!!!

Star Trek needs a FRESH infusion of thought and ideas while keeping its spirit alive. Having actually sat down and read the proposal online, I find that their concept is exciting. I am a HUGE fan of the original Star Trek with William Shatner and company. I was never that big on any of the other incarnations though. With each successive spin-off I lost more and more interest.

However, even the original Trek had a lack of depth, a lack of multi-layering which I think Straczynski and Zabel's concept absolutely adds in. More than that though, these guy's ideas are respectful of the fans. I mean come on! They are talking about KEEPING the majority of the original mythos, while bringing Star Trek into OUR time frame in terms of Movie Making abilities, making the Star Trek Universe updated in terms of what we know is possible NOW and not just what seemed plausible back in the 1960's...or the 1980's or 90's for that matter.

Paramount would be stupid indeed to pass on this concept. J. Michael Straczynski is a proven genius when it comes to story telling. I am a fan of B-5 AND the original Trek. I don't believe he is wanting to blend the two. I believe him when he says he wants to take the original series and just stand on the shoulders of Gene Rodenberry.

Again...Paramount would just be RETARDED to not go with this Concept.

I would watch it. Each and EVERY time it came on. And I can't say the same for ANYTHING Rick Berman and company would have come up with.

It is TIME to star writing Paramount folks in support of this series concept!!!!!!!!

It might be time to let the franchise cool off for awhile before making another, shall we say, not so wise decision that puts even the last remaining fans off the show(s).

After reading through this proposal I have to say that I'm excited.... and it's just a concept! :?

I haven't been an eager ST fan in quite some time, but with a "reboot" like this I can certainly say I'd be back. It's worked for BSG, it's worked for the Ultimate line of Marvel comics, it's worked for films... in a sense it worked for Stargate moving from film to TV.

The reincarnations of Star Trek were always restricted by the canon of TOS, but reinventing TOS  allows stories that apply today to be told in a way that audiences of the 21st century can get in to... and not only that, but all reinvigorate a dying franchise.

Let's face it, Star Trek is dying! Paramount needs something to draw new fans, the same way the updated BSG did. They tried to do that with the prequel, but again were constrained by canon and mythos developed in all other sereies.

ST: Reboot could totally relaunch and reinvigorate Star Trek for a new generation.

This proposal is two years old. There's been no news about it since.

And I have to say that despite what they think there would be a fair amount of fan resistance to other actors playing iconic characters.

you just knew I wuz gonna step in with a reactionary viewpoint, eh ;)

*lol*

I noticed it was 2 years old, but I still think it would be a worthwhile concept for Paramount to think about, instead of throwing out some spin-off crud in a few years.

And as for fan resistance, there was resistance to BSG's "Reboot", especially a certain female character who used to be male... ;) :D

But fans came to realise that this new BSG wasn't trying to be the original, it was something totally different, adding to the franchise. It pumped new blood in to it, and new fans too, which is exactly was Star Trek needs.

As a fan of TOS I would love it if they did this.  I think it would be great to have the old characters reimagined and surrounded by the SFX of today.  (Not that I don't get enjoyment form the cheesiness of TOS, afterall, it is part of it's appeal)

The only thing I would not like, is if it took itself too seriously, and became too dark.  And how would you deal with those classic Kirk lears at his female Yeoman? And those skirts!  We are far too PC now for them to get away with 1/2 the stuff they used too.

Also I think the sucess of TOS & TNG, is that the episodes were often very positive, and sometimes quite humerous (and the best movies were quite funny at times).  I found VOY & DS9 were not as much, and they didn't hold the same appeal for me.

I think this would be really interesting to see, and I for one would love too see Kirk & co gallavanting through the galaxy once more.
