Respect:

  1. To feel or show deferential regard for; esteem.
  2. To avoid violation of or interference with.
  3. To relate or refer to; concern.

All right. I disagree with the "deferential regard" and the "esteem". No need to crawl around on one's knees around each other. Maybe we need to define what we mean by respect in the PDs, just so we needn't pick it apart over and over.

Either way: The rules state clearly that we have to respect each other. Every registered member agreed to follow this rule upon registering. I do not believe that there are exceptions to this rule.  I don't believe that being a member for 5 years gives you any more right to disrespect other chatters than being a member for a week does. And this stuff about respect being earned – hah. You agreed to respect other chatters. No one's asking you to esteem everyone around you. What we ask, if we ask you to respect someone, is that you treat them with courtesy. Which simply means things like, saying hi, answering a question, letting them do their thing without making snide remarks about it, as long as they leave you alone with it.
Maybe 13-year-old kids playing Jedi annoys you whether they attempt to include you or not. Maybe you need to gain some perspective.

I'm not going to alter my views and outlook and modus operandi because a rule on a chatsite informs me to do so. Respect, for me, is always earned. Does that make me unsuitable for OTF? Then ban me now *l* Respect provided arbitrarily, in my experiences, is more often than not abused and taken for granted.

I've yet to meet an OTFer who hasn't shown someone disrespect at some stage.

Everyone jump down from your "mightier than thou" horses. It's really quite annoying.

This conversation seems to have degraded from a discussion of how people ought to be treated when they sign into an OTF chatroom or post in our forum to a debate on the definition of respect.

The PD 1 was written with Andrew Maxwell's version of respect in mind, so as he has yet to comment on this thread, allow me to take a stab at it from the interpretation with which I enforced the Prime Directives back when I did that sort of thing, by replacing the word respect with civility, and modifying the grammar accordingly.

The Outpost is an assembly of a diverse variety of individuals, with a large variance in cultures and lifestyles. However, everyone has in common his/her humanity.
Practice the 3 R's :

   * Civility toward others;
   * Civility toward self;
   * Take Responsibility for your own actions.

There, does that fly with everyone?

Anyway, this whole debate has largely been about definition and personal sense of honor. If the thing that keeps you from shoving the little old lady out of your way on the sidewalk is a level of respect that you feel you should show everyone regardless of who they are, how long you've known then, etc, then fine. If the thing that keeps you from shoving the little old lady out of your way on the sidewalk is courtesy, and you feel respect is something more that everyone should have to earn, then that's also fine.

Get over the words, people, they're just mouth-sounds our cultures have attached meaning to--a meaning that often differs from person to person. Focus on the idea.

Its been a Long time comming but finallly someone has hit the Nail on the head. And that person is Eagle.
He deserves much Kudos.

Kudos.

This thread is about what, the PD's.
But really it should be about the interpritation of the PD's. I'll give the parable of the 4 blind men and the elephant, which i'm sure we all know. i'll paraphrase it, you have people all describing certain aspects of it, but they won't know what the whole is until they get together to discuss it.

but of course then e have the "hoiler than thou" attitude displayed by some. beacuse they seem to think they have a better understanding of the Rules than others.

As it is all a matter of personal opinion i.e. Someone once said in chat that "People Choose to be Homosexual"
and i found that to be disrespectful to homosexuals so, I left.

The person saying it didn't mean to be disrespectful but in my opinion it came across as disrespectful, a lot of you are probebly thinking why I found it to be so. i'll explain, People don't choose to be gay, no man or woman makes the concious decision they will stop beccoming attracted to the opostite sex.

I'll stop before i start calling for a revision of the PD's but its clear to me its all about opinion over how the rules and regulations should be interipited.

Yours,

Man, Fat

That or the PD's are being over analyzied, over discussed and over dissected...

They are there to fall back on in extreme situations to keep our community members safe, and to give everyone a "safe" chatting experience.

To be honest...if you do or do not respect me I really don't care. If you do or do not like me, again I don't care. If you say things that upset me...again I really don't care. It's just words on a screen, and I along with anyone else have the full right to turn off this darn computer.

Do we really need to fight about the definition of words? That's getting a tad to political in a site that is supposed to be just for fun. If you can use the PD's like a guideline, then great, it's what we all should do. However, they aren't the 10 Commandments (or insert your appropriate Countries laws..whatever works in the sentence)...we're not going to hunt you down for not following them.

Just try as hard as you can, to think of others, "be excellent to each other" ...and relax!
It's not that hard, is it?

:) ~K

I had to edit...*pets Eagle* I really do admire you for getting it peep!! :)

Can I just apologise for breaking your thread.

Sorry - this is very meaningful because I almost never use that word :?

Now I feel the need to explain my previous thread.

I just liked the irony of calling everyone idiots in a thread called respect.

Now I'm gonna leave and avoid getting caught up in this slightly pointless (in my opinion) debate.

Like I said earlier on in this thread, I can't cast the first stone, and I meant that.

*nods at Bria's earlier puprle post* I'm on her page.  *nods at Eagle's post* I like his page too.

Deanna.....at the risk of opening up a whole new line of debate, do you really think people get "hunted down" for not following the Ten C's?
