A Poem....

Computer

Cold is it, which does not feel,

Smooth is the skin of bended steel.

Surrounded by things all inert,

The mind lusting for them, so bliss, so pervert.

Inanimate the object of our desire,

More the more if fed by wire.

Trade time I do with things living,

Spend time with devices with no misgiving.

I see the switch that calls it to life,

A simple flick, no effort, no strife.

It whispers our name with a processing hum,

Anxious am I for the next gadget to come

Deep inside the fan just blows,

Cooling the heat from it’s body does flows.

I feel its heart, when it starts,

The processor calls, the hard drive darts.

It does not care who it plays with,

All can be learned, so goes the myth.

The oracle of delphi is so manifested,

Loved by some, by others detested.

It’s eye is square, its vision so bright,

Holding me spellbound with it’s scanning light.

It flickers, it pulses, yes it does blink,

Resist the urge my brain does think.

Sublime is its nature, much like a kitten,

Keeps you for hours, or so it is written.

It does not judge, it does not preach,

A tool for all to learn, to teach.

Indifferent to the zero that ends its life,

Power it craves to give it life.

I see the zero, that kills it dead,

Binary bits no longer in it’s head.

Dead was the monster created by ‘stein’,

When love was gone, nothing was fine.

Cherish this box in such a short while,

Yet in the end you become a necrophile.

The philosopher Marinetti in a discussion on technology and where society is going, commented on how we as a society are becoming Necrophiles (ref. "Hacia a La Tecnologia).  A necrophile in this sense means the 'love of inanimate objects'.  People who choose to spend more time with their gadgets as opposed to socializing Marinetti considered philosophical necrophiles.

It is true that we as a society have become less personal; less of a community.  Technology has turned us into a society of necrophiles; lovers of inanimate objects like our TVs, Computers, etc.  We retreat into our homes after work, when in the past we use to participate in community events or simply sit outside and talk with our neighbors.

Please share this with a colleague or friend who may need some words of inspiration.
