There are lots of free programs out there, some web based and some downloadable... Lots are junk but some are truly spectacular. So what do you use? What's it called? What's it do? Where can I get a copy?
Ok it doesn't have to be your "favorite" free software persay... It could just be something you use a lot or find very useful in general. I use free media players, html writers, web browsers, encryption programs, email clients, and everything in between.
And don't be selfish. Include a link of where we can read about it, use it, or get it too.
I'll get the ball rolling:
BelArc Advisor: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
What is it? The Belarc Advisor builds a detailed profile of your installed software and hardware, missing Microsoft hotfixes, anti-virus status, CIS (Center for Internet Security) benchmarks, and displays the results in your Web browser. All of your PC profile information is kept private on your PC and is not sent to any web server.
In other words, learn all kinds of groovy stuff about your computer, very handy for upgrading.
Mozilla Thunderbird: http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/
What is it? An email client by the makers of Mozilla Firefox. All I can say is wow this thing rocks!
Arachnaphobia: http://www.arachnoid.com/arachnophilia/index.html
What is it? A free html editor. I've coded more pages with this thing than I care to count.
So let's hear it? What do you use?

well..one that I use is Image Crop You can use most pictures (even off the web!)and make them any size you want.(Excellent avy maker! and they will keep it online for 10 minutes..just enough time for you to upload it to your photobucket account or whatnot.... It's about the only image editor I can use as it's so simple.
*thinks* that's the only thing I can think of
Good topic Micha!

Bravissimo!
I agree, great topic. Because it helped me finding a bug in my OS with your BelArc Advisor. Thanks a lot!

Right now, my favorite free software is in a three-way tie between Winamp, Audacity, and AVG Virus Protection Software. All three programs are very efficient and i recommend them to everyone.

So I realize I have alot of ill-gotten programs on my machine, and it was difficult to find a few free programs *l*
First off is the Last.fm Scrobbler. This nifty little program/web service tracks your music listening habits and suggests new music that you my like. Last.fm has been responsible for introducing me to a few new bands that I listen to religously now. Last.fm is also a blog community for people who like music.
Skype is quickly becoming the best and most recognized voice chat programs available. It has greatly surpased conventional Instant Messangers voice capabilities and is more recommended than voice chat vetren Ventrillo. Skype is also used by many OTF members (myself included) so why haven't you downloaded it yet?
For those of us who like to not pay for other software, one freeware program is key. uTorrent is one of the most user friendly bit torrent clients out there. Unlike some of the other programs available it is also less of a stress on system resources by using very little storage and using a fraction of available memory.
Last, but not least... Core FTP Lite is my prefered FTP client. A necessity for any webhost/designer, Core is simple with a good user interface.
Just a few of the free programs I use.

I personally like Grisoft's AVG Anti-Virus software (the free version obviously)
It's reliable and it WORKS and most importantly, it's free. I also have a free copy of Symantic provided by the university I attend and AVG has caught a few things that Symantic missed.

My laptop's a bit clear of stuff at the mo, but one thing I recently came across is McAfee SiteAdvisor which can be a Firefox extenstion or an IE add on. It rates sites in search engines like Google for green (site okay) yellow (site caution) or red (site could be bad and contain dangerous adware, downloads or popups).
It sits in your taskbar, telling you about sites you are on, too, (outpost is green) and could stop you hitting adware and nasty stuff before even clicking that untested link.

http://barelylegalblog.blogspot.com -possibly one of the funniest blogs ever; I'm not in law school but these guys still make me laugh so much!!!
Itunes guys, itunes. and then hitting www.apple.com to hit up free downloads for my powerbook...those gadgets stuff is nifty and let's not forget ibank!!! (helps me keep track of expenses)
http://www.pdfonline.com I've used this HUNDREDS of times to turn word docs into PDF files. Real life-saver.
And finally: the one and only www.bbc.co.uk I love "in pictures", a collection of top pictures for the week sent in by people around the world...lets me go travelling without leaving my computer

My family and I have always had bad luck with AVG. In fact, just days after I installed their software, I had to wipe my hard drive and do a total system restore on my PC because of all the problems it caused. One program that I love, particularly for chatsaves, is WatchetShot. It's a screen shot program that lets you take a screen shot, then crop out of it, and save what you cropped it down to. As for torrent programs, I've never been able to get one to work and I've tried several of them. If anyone has any hints or such, I'd be more than happy to hear them!

I'm using The Gimp, a wonderful alternative to programs like Photoshop. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages.
Yeah, and I was stealing the description from the website.
But nevertheless, this program rocks!

I love the file-sharing program Ares. It does a decent job of tracking down mp3s. I also like Bitlord, an excellent bittorrent programs. I haven't had much problems with it.

Hmm... where to start? In no particular order...
1. μtorrent (not utorrent) 2. MSN Messenger 3. mIRC (not technically free, but no one ever pays for it) 4. Winamp 5. Firefox (and extensions) 6. Songbird 7. Ad-Aware 8. Spybot S+D 9. Thunderbird 10. Daemon Tools
... and I'm sure there's more I use.

Best free software is nortons though...
you always get a 60 day trial of one with a new computer, install it, then on day 59, re-install your complete computer, its always a safe thing to do to re-install your computer every so often, and doing so technically gives you nortons for life
awesome yesh?

Ah, most of the ones I use have already been listed, so I'll refrain from listing them again. I did come across a really cool program recently, namely Terragen. It's free to download and use, and you can use it to create photographic landscapes, skyscapes and seascapes. It takes a while to get into, and I'm nowhere near any good at it yet, but I love it.
I also like IconArt, which is a free program that lets you create cursors and icons. I've put several of the ones I've made on my website, I love making cursors.
