I downloaded Windows Vista. There's nothing illegal about obtaining it, Microsoft themselves have an evaluation copy free to download...

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/

I've got it on my PC right now. First thoughts are, very impressive.

You'll need around 7.5GB of hard drive space to install it. Plus the requirements for Vista are a hell of alot up on XP. Your video card will have to be decent before it will let you install. You'll also need over 500MB of RAM for the install to go ahead. Vista will stop you in your tracks before you install, if your machine is not up to the job. Before you download make sure you look up the PC requirements. The download is over 2GB, so don't waste time if your PC is not up to the job. There is no ignoring Vista when it says you can't install, it really will kick you out of the install process. So, don't bother trying!

Once you have downloaded, burn the ISO image you've just downloaded to a DVD. Obviously, if you don't have a DVD burner, then you can't install Vista this way. When you've burned the disc its just the same process as installing XP, or another OS.

I was only prompted once to re start during installation. It was smooth, and quite fast, a little longer than XP took to install though.

What's good about Vista?

So far i like the look, alot. Everything is smooth looking, and soft on the eyes. You'll know what i mean if you install.

I've been online with it, The new Internet explorer is nice, i like it alot. ( i know, i can't believe i just said that! ). MSN messenger Live looks very nice on Vista.

The "Live" tag is expanded on more in Vista beyond MSN Messenger. Windows Live search looks great. Rivaling Google, especialy on its image search function. Vista even has links to "Office Live" an online version of Office.

Windows media player 11 looks fantastic on Vista! In its skin, and picture quality. I installed a codec pack, and it played last weeks episode of Lost perfectly. The best looking video i ever seen on a PC infact.

Unfortunately my sound card manufacturer has not released drivers for Vista yet. Some have, hopefully yours will have Vista support.

From appearances at least ( i've not explored this fully yet ), Vista has an extremely beefed up security centre, which is designed to run along side your virus software, you'll be asked to approve every single thing thats brought onto your PC!

You can switch Vista to all Windows OS's as far back as Win98. In the "compatibility Wizard" which means if you had old software you loved from way back, you select for example "win98" and Vista will install it just as it was on Win98, or ME, or NT, XP or whatever. However, nothing i've installed so far has needed it.

Nero does not work on Vista! It won't let you install. However, Vista has a great burning app built in. With a simple one click short cut to it from any folder on the OS.

The side bar. A much talked about feature of Vista. It is a stand out feature. Fully customizable with gadgets you can add. You set it to the left or right of your desk top. It can display, news headlines grabbed from the net. A clock! share prices! weather! Even a mini slideshow from a folder of your choosing! And lots of other things. This will probably be a huge thing online, places to go and download new gadgets etc.

There are many features, too many infact for me to remember. Lots that you discover and say, that's great! little things mostly, such as clicking "view" and seeing your thumbnails in a folder change instantly each time you click. from list, details, thumbs etc.

I suppose what i'm saying is. All those little bits of software you downloaded to do cool things on XP, for whatever reason, you'll probably find them already built in to Vista. It appears Microsoft have looked around, and stolen many aspects of popular software! But, it makes for a great OS, and  tidier looking PC when its all built in already.

Folder icons look amazing, they will fill up with sample images of the image files you have inside.

Like i said, too many little features to name here. I'd be here all day. You'd be extremely bored! :P

So, if you want to ask me a question, i'll try and answer. Being that Vista is such a big download, i thought members may like to pick my brains ( what there is of them ) or anybody else who has Vista. In order that they can download knowing it's for them.

Oh, the important stuff, for office workers around the world. Spider solitaire looks awesome. :P

OTF looks fantastic too on the new IE, or Mozilla!

It does look very pretty, but I very much doubt my two year old laptop, or even the main comp (older) will be able to handle it and 7gigs will take a hefty chunk out of what I have left on both.

Plus, I heard somewhere the free version is a trial that will run out next year, forcing you to *cough* illegally download *cough* or buy the proper version. It'd be nice if microsoft gave xp some fun tweaks for those disinclined to change or unable, but they want to keep up/steal from the Joneses, so I guess I'll have to look from afar in my xp world :(

David : What alot of us are forgetting is that these are Beta's. They will have some bugs. Especialy versions of Vista prior to RC1.

I've run RC1 and RC2 ( which is supposed to be the last before release proper. )

I've not encountered some of the bugs i've heard about from earlier versions, so i guess some are fixed.

I'm probably misplacing my trust, but i do have some faith in Microsoft, and i believe these last bugs will be gone before the official release. *L*

QD : I think the biggest flaw of Vista is the huge leap in PC requirements needed to run it, compared to XP.

When we all installed XP, not many had problems. If you were a bit short on RAM you lost some fancy effects, or high end graphic elements from XP. It still ran though. With Vista, if you fall short on any requirements you won't even get it on your PC. It'll stamp its little feet and refuse to install. :P

If you don't have a new or powerful enough PC to handle Vista, or you just don't think it'll be worth the money, and you're bored with XP. My advice is check out LINUX!

Linux is Free, innovative, and nice looking ( in some cases ). A huge plus point is you are totally free of Microsoft! :P

You can also download Linux, burn it to a CD or DVD, and run it live. meaning you don't have to install it. It boots from the CD or DVD, not from your HD.

A great way to truly evaluate it without any hassle. No need to remove your Windows OS or touch a thing. The Live version will allow you to check everything out before you maybe want to make a change more permanant. Or partition your HD to have both windows and Linux.

Here's a link to the site where you can find out about the Linux version below.

Looks interesting :D

Point about the RAM though, as I may have said, my lappy is just about two years old and only has 192:( which is a tad short of the 500 required. I think the only way I'd get Vista is on a new system entirely, the way I got XP.

It definately looks awesome though!

Lzrman : I found it quite insulting when Vista told me my PC was not good enough! :P

I tried installing on two PC's before i finally got it to work on this one. This one is right on the wire for the RAM needed to run Vista though.

My video card is apparently, "not good enough" to run Vista's DVD making software too! So far, that is the only thing not to run on this PC. I also can't use the "Aero Glass" theme.

The boot option when you start up, "do you wish to boot Vista or an earlier version of Windows" is very handy when you have both OS on your PC, but i can see how it would be annoying if your installation failed.

Getting back to Linux, i'm giving SUSE Linux 10.1 a trial run on a live DVD. So far i am extremely impressed with it.

I am about to repair an old PC, i will definately be installing it on there rather than Windows. If you have a PC that is used just generally, SUSE Linux 10.1 is a great way to go. In other words, if you don't specialize heavily in one particular thing on your PC this is perfect.

It has so much software built into it. CD and DVD burning, photo software, drawing software, video editing, office software ( comparable to windows ), a whole host of media players, lots of games, 4 browsers, even a bit torrent application! Plus lots more. Just about everything you'll need infact.

IM's ( including GAIM , which has Yahoo, AIM, ICQ, and MSN messengers built into it. ), plus i would recommend AMSN Linux version for a more familiar MSN messenger look and feel.

To be kind to Microsoft, i'll say Vista "borrowed" alot of ideas from SUSE 10.1 and many other sources.

Oh, and next time i have Vista booted up, i'll grab a screenshot of OTF! :D

Some screen shots of Vista from my PC.

I rarely use Vista at this point i must admit, i stick to XP. I don't have the variety of software i need every day installed. Or the peace of mind with the security aspects just yet. I don't want to install it all twice over! When i find a suitable firewall to accompany Avast ( which i find runs best on Vista out of 3 i tried. ) i shall start using it regularly.

At present its a bit of a novelty i enjoy exploring every so often.

It's also worth pointing out that due to driver issues you may not be able to get online unless you have a router / ethernet socket. Any device that uses drivers to get you online depends on those drivers being supported in Vista, and they probably won't be just yet.

Vista Desktop. With cool Turtle wallpaper!

OTF in Internet Explorer.

Media Player 11. I know these two are pretty much the same. But i liked the screen captures! BSG and Supernatural! :P

Vista's Live image search. This has another of those nice little features. You can add images to a "scratchpad" when you're done with your search choose the final choices from the scratchpad to keep, the rest are discarded.

Vista "speech recognition utility" I am gutted that my sound card has no drivers for Vista. I can't play with this feature yet! :(

i lost quite a bit of sharpness on these images. The real thing looks way better.

It can screencap :?

I can get a vista theme for FF *l* but it does make you wonder just how many of the gazillion PCs out there won't come up to spec. I think the vast majority of affordable computers and laptops were bought with XP and just won't cut it. I know I can't afford a new one and can barely afford the processor upgrade of £40 I intend to get for my lappy in the new year  :D

Could it be too much of an upgrade for the masses where Microsoft is concerned?

QD- loving the black task bar, though. I want that!! :o

XP can screen cap. I think my old ZX Spectrum could too. Wait..no it couldnt. Or was it my ZX81? :P

Vista does strike me as a bit elitist as far as PC or laptop requirements go. As i said earlier, it is a huge leap up compared to what was needed upgrading to XP.

Who knows, maybe this is a big conspiracy to make everybody upgrade their computer? :?

I can see alot of people buying it, not having bothered to look at the requirements, and being very upset when it tells them... sorry, your PC is not up to running me.

I had the bad luck i suppose you could call it, of our PC giving up on us a couple of years ago. We got a pretty good one to replace it. If the old one was still with us. Then Vista would not be an option, and i would not lose alot of sleep over it.

I've got it cos i could, but, i've never been bothered about keeping up with the Jones's.

If i had an older PC, i would be satisfying any needs for a change with Linux, and probably keep XP too for software compatibility. Then boot whichever i needed or felt like using.

QD : many dvd apps have a screen capture feature. But you can always hit the "print screen" key on your keyboard. Then open up paint and hit edit, then paste. Save as whatever you like.

I had "Voice Chess" on the ZX Spectrum. Its annoying losing at chess to a computer, but even more so when it mocks you openly!  :o

which it did! :P

mind you, chess computers are handy, if you're in a long distance game. :k *whistles*

I haven't tried Vista yet, but from what I'm hearing from you guys it sounds pretty neat, but of course, it's going to mean lots of people are going to have to upgrade their machines, though.  I just bought a new PC about two months ago, and it has XP Media Center Edition, with the Vista Compatable option so I'm assuming that it's up to snuff for what Vista needs.  I'm not a big fan of OS Betas, as there are so many bugs that still need to be worked out.  If I had a spare system that met the requirements, I would install it on there to play a bit with it.  But for now, I'll stay with XP and live vicariously through all you guys.  :D

Had to pull one of my old 30 gig hard drives outa storage, but it was worth it. Didn't feel like taking the time to duel boot or wipe my drive for a beta, but after I play around with it somemore it may just be worth it to upgrade when it is released.
Hopefully, this time Microsoft actually will fix some of the bugs before release rather then trying to patch it two days after....

It's ironic that while I'm selling computers, I know jack diddly squat about Vista. Then again, I haven't used XP for any length of time, so there! (A)

1: When is Vista due out?

2: I've noticed machines with stickers saying "Vista Capable"; while others proudly proclaim "Vista Premium Ready". Is there a difference?

This is guess work, as i've not been looking at new PC's.

I assume the "Vista ready" PC's will be capable of running Vista when it's released ( Which is January so i hear. ), possibly though, they could run it with minimum requirements.

Vista Premium Ready i would say, will run Vista fully, and handle all it's features?

I read a big article about Vista this week. The PC magazine i was reading got a machine with the exact minimum requirements stated by Microsoft. Loaded Vista onto it. It worked, barely. Some of the fancier desktop themes could not be run at the same time as playing video for example.

It seems the Microsoft minimum requirements are set a little too low. So, seek advice if you are buying with Vista in mind.

hrm... i did give Vista a test run about a month ago, before i updated all of my video drivers, it made 98fe look like a stable OS. I did like a couple of the perks tho, it is a very nice design to it, but really it is the ####### child of XP and OSX... and that 512mb of ram is pooh, i recomend at least 1gb of ram, other wise you may be looking at one hell of a wreck. but just like any other microcrap, i will despise it with a passion for about 2-3 years, then it will grow on me...

at least that is how it worked with XP.

DOWN WITH MICROSOFT INSTALL LINUX

I had a Sony VAIO training night and it was interesting, but I digress.

The annoying thing with Vista seems to be that it needs at least 128mb of dedicated graphics card to run properly; not counting the graphics capabilities you'd need for everything else, such as gaming and the like.

I also believe there's another difference and it has to do with upgrading.

XP Home can upgrade into Vista Home Basic; and Premium.

XP Pro can upgrade into Vista Business Edition (sic).

A fourth version is Ultimate, which cannot be upgraded (from XP).

I think that's what it refers to. I digress. I lost my train of thought!

things must have changed since the version of Vista i'm running if that's true.

I started to upgrade from from XP home to Vista Ultimate. Everything would have been ok by the look of things, but the installation stopped due to my video card not being able to run Vista.

Can't be sure because it never went the distance. But i had nothing to tell me it would not have worked.

The Vista Ultimate i'm running is a clean install on my second HD.

Bont : I am a big fan of Linux. If i could get it to run my video editing, 3d animating software etc. I would run it full time. I've used various live Linux dvd's,  i'm very impressed with what i've seen.

I plan to install Linux on another PC i am going to bring back to working order shortly.

I've found many Linux OS's come with a great selection of apps. Everything the casual PC user would need. photo editing, video editing, a host of messengers and browsers, office apps ( just as good as microsoft, better in many ways ), lots of fun games, and nice clean looking desktops. Just in case a virus actauly ever attacks a Linux machine, there is anti virus software built in to some.

Some even come with a bit torrent client built in! Awesome stuff.

When you consider these guys put these Linux OS's together and distribute them for free, they all deserve medals.

Like i said, if you are just a casual PC user, and that list of software is ok for you ( there's much more there too ) i would give Linux a go. The best thing is you can download a live cd or dvd disc and run it as a trial for as long as you like without touching your PC or disrupting windows.

If you are running a "suspect" copy of windows why not go legal? and have no worries about validations, or updates. Get Linux!

David : Like i said before, not really had a chance to give a Linux OS a really good long trial. Which is the only way to truly test it.

But, i still maintain it would be a good option for certain PC's. Especialy if you do your home work and go for an OS with software built in to the OS which can tackle just about anything.

The most recent Linux i tried had...

A full suite of office software ( as good as windows )
Anti Virus
photo editing
paint apps
video editing
sound recording/editing
bit torrent client
3 messengers ( MSN, yahoo sign in etc )
3 browsers ( including mozilla, sea monkey )

and many games, arcade, puzzle, cards, chess, etc.

Let's not forget this is a free OS!

A walkthrough by an experianced Linux user would be great though. :)

As a update on my Vista experiance. I've found it exceptional in every way. Very stable. My PC is working better than it ever has. Vista seems to have got the most out of it.

My PC is faster and can do more since i installed Vista. I expected just the opposite. Maybe the improved and more efficient workings of the OS outweigh the more RAM etc needed, and it really does deliver better results.

I have my sound card working now too!

Which mean i have the voice activated Vista software working! It's awesome! :)

Windows Vista Security ...

... awesome thing.

There to stop programs installing and such without the user saying so...

... pitty they left a "loophole" which means a program can un-install another program 'silenty' without user interaction, or even knowing.
