I'm starting this project as I am curious as to what you guys are interested in seeing/participating in the Outpost. That's what the suggestion box is for I know but I thought having a topic for discussion would help to brainstorm new ideas and possibly inspire others.

First off, for me I would like to see a BS Galatica or Firefly week in TF. I know Amanda has tons of Firefly avatars she would be willing to contribute but personally, I'd like to think of new ideas as I'd like to see something more than just a new chattop and avs (though those are nice!;).

So far I'm stumped except for my Great Halloween Idea (which you all will see in October I promise)

Any ideas out there? :)

Hey folks!

I love the idea behind this thread. The person who came up with it must surely be something special indeed. I'd love to give them a kiss, and you all should feel the same!  :o  (A)  ;)

Anyway, moving on. As some of you may know, or not know, there's a big change occuring in the way Projects are looked after and managed on a high-level. We folks who are looking for ways to improve that side of OTF feel that one of the best ways to get new things started is be appealing to the community, instead of waiting for submissions to be sent in via a form. Hence, we have this thread \o/

As Kayana said, we're looking for any idea you may have - no matter how small or "silly" you may think it is. Someone may love the idea! This thread provides the perfect opportunity to discuss and build upon project ideas, and improve them as a community. It also allows those who decide which Projects make it, and which don't, to see what sort of reaction the idea is going to get from the public.

So, folks: give us your juicy ideas, and get your brains a-thinkin'  :o

I would like those projects that have fallen and haven't the exposer they require to be re-promoted or re designed or something

A few projects I personally haven't seen updated in a while:
Seniors Playground
Downloads Project
Gateway
Link Exchange Program

Those are a few of the projects I would like to see revised to life.

On the side note, Jaq Doctor who for the win, lets have a doctor who week, im sure babel will agree with this one.

I've mentioned this before here. But, i think it would be a good idea to have an ongoing encyclopedia on Star Wars, Trek etc. Or any sci fi show or film which holds interest and has a following among those who are interested in putting one together, Stargate, Dr Who, etc.

This could be contributed to by members, and always updated, and always growing. Members always have a favourite character, episode, planet, space ship, etc which they would like to put together a feature on. Over time it could become quit comprehensive. It also suits people getting involved for a short time, then going away. Without hurting the project. It would be nice if members could submit entries without being attached to depts, and also from any clearance level.

If any members have original content they have written, or produced within the theme of one of the encyclopedia's it could also be included ( they could promote their work by adding an entry about their title or whatever ) , that way it would also serve to promote and cross over with other projects within the outpost.

I think many people would enjoy working on this. It seems to me to be more relavent than churning out reviews and such. It is also something that could start showing up on many google searches, which can only be good for attracting fresh faces to the Outpost ( which i feel we badly need ) .

It would be good if a monitor or moderator could be assigned to this, and the encyclopedia could be added to like adding a forum topic. This would allow members to put something together, and see it out there. It is quite disheartening to work hard on something , submit it, only to see it vanish into a black hole of backed up work waiting to be uploaded and added to a project.

What happened to the monthly trivia quizes?  Did they die or did they just hide them?  Those were the only times I could actually participate in trivia because I 99% of the time work during the live events.  I'd like to see those again (I haven't checked recently, but I've been peeking in once and a while to see if they're up).

And, as usual, my suggestion for everything is STARGATE!

I do like the member-maintained encylcopeadia idea! Could be something worth looking into.

And, Polson, as far as the Online trivias go, the group was disbanded last year due to a lack of activity and progress being made. If you want it re-starting, however, CL6 Alex would be the person to talk to, with him being the Trivia TL. As long as it was maintained and updated regularly, I don't see why not!

Cheers folks  :)

I don't think reinventing the wheel is necessarily bad, as projects can be just for the OTF populace to enjoy.

With regards to an OTFWiki based on OTFers' interests I see it more as a fansite than an information portal. OTFers could contribute aspects of a particular show they really enjoy eg their own fan writing/drawings, unique screenshots etc and I think it would be a lot more interesting than a normal fan wiki as it would be more quirky and specialised.

I can see a looot of organizational difficulty (who would take charge? Engineering? Guilds?) but it would do the task of letting individual OTFers with little webmaster knowledge be able to display their work and show off OTFers' interest.

There would also be problems with overlap (should an entry be in artist guilds instead? who should be in charge? how many shows would we want to put in?) but it might be interesting...

Yep, i mentioned in my original post that it could cross over and include members fan fiction, art, or anything. I'm hoping it will encourage work on original content infact. It would serve to feature and showcase members work for sure.

I don't think there's much we could do that has not been done before in some form or another, at some time in the past by somebody else.

But, reading somebody's work we know, or are friends with, is a whole lot more interesting i think. For instance, i would rather read Babels input on Dr Who than somebody elses from some random Google hit, because i know him to be a huge fan, with a real passion for the subject matter. Therefore i'm going to instantly find it more interesting.

I'm sure many other members know others whose opinions and ideas they would enjoy reading on Star wars and Trek too, or even they themselves are passionate to the point where they quite rightly feel all the other content online cannot hold a candle to what they themselves know or could do.

As for which dept gets the project. Can we not have a representitive from all those depts that would need to be involved working in some kind of group?

I'm not talking about replacing the guilds. I'm suggesting the encyclopedia could have as inclusions, content produced by members. If somebody wrote a fan fiction, for guilds about Klingons for example. Then maybe the author would think it was cool to have a reference, synopsis, and a link to their story show up under Klingons in the encyclopedia.

What i'm saying is, in that instance, a synopsis of a story and maybe a link to the guilds or wherever the story is featured at OTF. I'm not suggesting anything is replaced by this. far from it. it can act as a show case, or a sign post, or as a means for people to discover projects and work done in other areas of OTF.

Most of it will be new i should imagine. With people adding short features of characters, episodes, planets, ships, etc. I just brought up the fact that as we could be starting this and creating it ourselves, and we have a community that does produce original stuff occasionaly, it would be good to add that in. Much as the expanded Star Wars universe books and comics are now in Star Wars Encyclopedias in book shops.

I don't think our WikiOTF should be primarily about Star Trek or our favorite shows, because like Teek said, reinventing the wheel.  Someone else has been there, done that, and far surpassed what we're capable of creating here.

It should be about OTF!  About the members!  About our history!  People should be able to put in "wedgies" and then read, "A typical expression of affection between chatters.  An art form.  The reason we don't allow armory use during guest chatters."  THAT would be something I would read.  I can look up sci fi facts anywhere online, or in my own personal library, or just sifting through the hords of useless trivia packed away in my head.  But I think an encyclopedia about OTF by OTF would be very very cool, something entertaining for everybody who attends the site, and a chance for everyone to contribute their own little piece of OTF.

I agree, and I don't see how the WikiOTF would replace any departments at all *l* Is there a rule that says an art submission must only be displayed by the AG? Why can't it be in both places?

It would need a lot of thought and effort, epseically in getting it set up and what it will encompass, but I think it could be a great feature

By all means produce an "OTF" Wiki-OTF. That's a good suggestion. But not just that. I think we're already in danger of becoming a closed little group. Embarking on something that just appeals to people who have been here a while will just reinforce it.

So what if it is reinventing? I call it more putting our own slant on something. The film guild, library, video game reviews, biographies, are all done here. They've all been done before. In the case of reviews done at OTF, most have already been done usualy in the form of a Preview by people who get to see or see the subject matter in advance. That is reinventing the wheel to a huge extent.

I have alot of confidence in people here, i can see our projects being the best. You can be innovative within this Wiki-OTF, making damn sure there is nothing like it anywhere else.

If this is set up and done right, it will be low maitenance, it will give us exposure, and it will appeal to the fan community, who might take a look via a Google hit, and stay ( OTF is in a position to get very favourable google results. Its the number one result for Trek chat, it could be the number one for any sci fi project it emberked on. ). That is what we need. new people, not just battoning down the hatches and reminiscing among each other about who did what to who, and when, and a bunch of old in jokes that is just going to go right over a newcomers head.

I always really hoped this place would as a sci fi genre site, have a significant amount of content about Trek, Star Wars etc. This was a good way i thought of getting that.

I also think it would be awesome to produce our own sci fi. As some know i'm involved in making a Star Wars film, with a few other OTF'ers. This could also take the form of taking a members fan fiction from a short story, to a play, to a radio play. When i called for actors to be in the Star Wars film, i got alot of interest from OTF'ers. I think that could be very exciting. Just encouraging original work in the form of the written word, comics, art work, anything. Would be good.
