I know this has been done before but we've decided to give this another go. Thanks to one of our lovely team, we have a starting paragraph. We challenge you to continue the story! :k

Continue it anyway you want but it must include the five words at the end of the paragraph, then choose 5 words that the person following you must use in their paragraph.

Easy really ;)

She woke up swearing.  She did that sometimes, when in her waking moment she came to a realization about what the following day would bring.  Waking up was often an unpleasant process for her; even on days that she thought would be good she couldn’t bring herself to enjoy the process of being ripped from the dark warmth of sleep and the curious realm of dreams.  All her life she had been told “don’t let go of your dreams”, but to her the saying was ridiculous because you had to let go of your dreams every time you woke up.  It was always a painful experience, though.  Falling asleep wasn’t a problem because reality would be there again when you woke up.  Not so with dreams, which popped like a soap bubble the moment your conscious took over your brain.  Occasionally she was fortunate and would have a repeat dream, but mostly the worlds and people that her slumbering mind had created were destroyed for good when her eyelids fluttered open to the morning’s light.

On the way to the mailbox, the Imaginings that ran through her mind, hoping that she would get a letter from her husband that went overseas three months ago, the last time she felt loved.

She inserted her key into the mailbox and open it to a sea of disappointment. As she searched from her mail, all that came up was bills. She thought to herself that live would be so much easier if her husband would just get home.

Months ago when her mother spoke to her about the philosophical notion that loves triumphs all, no matter what. But as she stands in front of her mailbox, looking around and seeing all the happy couples with their children. She stand alone with the unborn child that is due anyday now and her husband in a hostile land across the sea.

No time to mope, though . . . things to do, people to see . . . in today's case, things to do included doing the shopping and people to see included her doctor.

Shopping.

A chore made all the more wearisome with a bloody big weight around your middle, let alone when that weight was kicking seven bells out of your womb. Thank god for the car! She pushed the KEY into the lock and opened the door. She got in with a little difficulty, my god this baby was big - and active - and plonked in her favourite CD. She loved driving with some music playing, it was one of the times she was HAPPY. She'd sit there, behind the wheel, trying to recall her dreams, though without much luck - her dreams remained elusive, the TRIUMPHS, the love, the adventures she revelled in while asleep . . .  all gone from her conscious mind. Just so many neurons adrift in a SEA of brain cells and nerve clusters. Still. Things to do and . . . christ. A child, running ACROSS the road and was there time to brake and  . . . .

BAM....she sits still in her car staring ahead at the empty road. She gets out, runs to the front and stands agape when she sees the young child lying on the road, appearing to be the lifeless. She turns and looks at the front exterior of her car, with a dent from hitting the child.

She dials 911 and kneels beside the child, placing her hand on his neck to see if he had a pulse. Luckily, he did have a pulse, he was alive, and she sighed relief. The ambulance arrived later to pick up the child, who was sitting up by then. She looks at her watch and panics, she was late.

She arrives at Price Slasher, she works as a cashier. When she got through the side doors, her manager stands in front of her, rolling his eyes in disgust.

"You're late again." He said.

"By only 10 minutes though." She said.

"That's no excuse. Look, I know you're going through some tough times with your husband overseas, school--"

"I hit a child today when they were playing on the road."

"Oh. I'm sorry, is the child ok?"

"Yeah."

"Well, I suppose that's a good reason to be late. Just don't let it happen to much, otherwise I'll have no choice but to let you go."

"Yes, sir."

She walks over to her register pod and logs into the computer. She was in a state of confusion over the manager chewing her out.

I can't believe that. I know this is the third time I've been late in 3 weeks. Before that, I've never been late before. I never called in nor had a no show, but yet all the other cashiers have. I'm the only cashier that does their job right, yet I get yelled at for being 10 minutes late. I can't wait to graduate and get a decent job instead of this.

Happy smile, please thank you, have a nice day.   The words of a cashier.   The job was boring, but paid.  She wished she had remembered to bring out her stool.  Usually there were no seats at the cash desks, but as she was pregnant, she had rights.  One of those included a stool.  Her back ached.  Her legs ached.  More customers joined the line for her till and she sighed silently.

Oh but her back was sore!   She did a little wriggle-squirm trying to remember how to ease the pressure like she had been told, but suddenly had an icksome moment when she felt something gooey in her knickers.  A queasy flush of horror washed over her from head to toe and she suddenly realised something was happening.

"RIGHT, she thought, what do I do?  OK, get to the toilets."  She mumbled a quick sorry to her customer as she pressed her 'help' bell 3 times and she ran as fast as she could, clenching her legs together as she felt a warm wettness blooming in her toursers.

She passed her Manager who gave her a thunderous look before staring with DISGUST at her trousers.

Running into the toilets, she quickly sat down on the nearest loo and heard a splash.  Shaking she looked around as she tried to gather her thoughts.  " I don't bloody BELEIVE this!"  She thought to herself.  " Of all the bloody places for this to happen!  and where was Mike when she needed him?  She told him, told him, she needed him here!"

"Samantha?  Samantha are you allright?  Sam?"  Denise called through the door.   Glad it was Denise who had been through all this herself, she called back that she was fine, her waters had Yo broke and she was a mess.  "You shouldn't even be working this far on, wait there and I will get you sorted."

Two minuets later, Denise passed her through a bundle of paper towels, some maternity pads and a cleanish pair of trousers that had been handed back after one of the staff had left.  "Put hose trousers on INSTEAD of the wet ones, get cleaned up and I will take you to the hospital hun".

"Having contractions?" asked the midwife.  "You missed your appointment with your named Doctor today, that was silly now wasn't it?"  Jeeze, thought Samantha, how the hell did she ever GRADUATE with a bedmanner like that?  "No contractions, just a backache" she said wearily, wasn't your waters breaking enough??

Samantha grimaced as a contraction rolled over her and gripped Denise's hand tightly until it passed. What she wouldn't give to be at home right now, curled up with Mike on the settee, eating SAUSAGE and chips with CURRY sauce from the local fish shop, just like they did every Friday night. She turned to Denise.

"Will you try and get in touch with Mike for me? Let him know what's happening?" She moaned as another contraction overwhelmed her and tightened her grip on Denise's hand still further. "Please! I can't do this on my own!"

Denise smoothed her hand over Samantha's HOT brow. "You can honey, you're strong and you have me here. I'll try and get hold of him, you know he'd be here if he could sweetheart. I'll be right back, stay strong honey." She let go of Samantha's hand and quickly left the room.

Samantha breathed deeply as the contraction passed, trying to ignore the bustling of the midwife who was still in the room with her. She felt lonely and cheated. Since she'd discovered she was pregnant, her and Mike had always talked about him being at the birth of their first child and irrationally she felt that he had let her down. She felt a single tear course it's way down her cheek. Opening her eyes, she discovered Denise was back and was brandishing a CAMERA. She looked at her quizically.

"I thought we could take Mike lots of photographs of his baby, give him something to keep him sane while he's away." Samantha smiled at her friends thoughtfulness. "I'm sure he'd love that, but not til we're both cleaned up, can't have him bragging with photographs of how I look right now!" Samantha said with a wry look down. "Any news?"

Denise swallowed, glad that Samantha had closed her eyes again. How could she tell her that her husband was LOST? That he'd gone missing on the last excursion his team had made.

When Samantha opened her eyes, Denise was holding her hand with a look of sadness in her eyes.

"What happened to Mike?"

"Sam....I just got a letter back from my son. He said on their last excursion that Mike was missing."

Samantha had a terrified look on her face as she chugged the rest of her coffee.

"Do they know if he's alive or not?"

"They really don't know. All they know is that he's been missing for 2 weeks."

"Oh this is just wonderful Denise. I'm getting behind at work, the car has been sounding funny, I'm barely able to keep up on these bills, and now my husband is missing."

"I wish there was something I could do for you Sam."

"Well, just being here for me is good enough. I just want him home."

"I'm sure he'll be okay."

"I hope so."

Denise and Samantha look out the main window in the hospital room. and view the mountainous landscape. Samantha views it as a quick distraction from the emotional interior breakdown of herself from the news that her husband went missing.
