MediaGuardian.co.uk reported a rumor that the BBC is considering a feature-film version of the long-running hit SF series Doctor Who.
Jane Tranter, controller of fiction at the BBC, told the online news outlet of the Guardian newspaper that certain film ideas based on BBC television shows "are staring us in the face already and may seem too obvious." She also hinted at the possibility that those ideas might include Doctor Who, saying, "I would not rule out a film version of Doctor Who."
The statement follows the announcement that the television series will be taking time off in between the fourth and fifth seasons. The timing might allow for the production of a feature film during the break, although star David Tennant has already committed to return to the stage for the Royal Shakespeare Company next year.
Tranter would not confirm whether Tennant will return for either a film or the fifth season of Doctor Who. "All we can say is that David is a fantastic Doctor, and that he is doing Hamlet."
The rumor also fueled speculation that former Doctor Who co-star Billie Piper, who played companion Rose Tyler in the first two seasons, would return to the role for a feature film. British tabloid News of the World reported on Sept. 30 that Piper was close to signing a deal to return, but for a three-part special next summer, not a feature film.
