Sanctuary's Tapping Does It All
Amanda Tapping, star and executive producer of SCI FI Channel's new series Sanctuary, told reporters that she also directs when called upon.
"God, man! Are you insane? Shoot me now!" Tapping said in a group interview at SCI FI's digital press weekend in Estes Park, Colo., last weekend. "I'm actually the go-to director, so I have directed Sanctuary. Not an episode. [Director and executive producer] Martin [Wood] had to do a talk at the Vancouver Television Festival, and so I was directing that day."
Tapping fills in if the principal director calls in sick or if something happens, and she will also step in to helm a second unit or for insert shots.
When not behind the camera, Tapping plays Dr. Helen Magnus, an enigmatic 157-year-old scientist out to protect mankind from monsters of all kinds, including the monsters within.
"I'll tell you a funny story," Tapping added. "Here I am, my first day directing on Sanctuary--not like I don’t have enough to do. We're shooting in an armored car. We've gotten pictures of this truck, and Martin said, 'This is how I want to shoot it: through this window, through this here, come across the front.' I said, 'Great. Great. Got an idea.' So the truck arrives. It's not the truck that was in the picture. It's a full-on armored truck. The windows don't open. The front windshield is tinted. So that blows the whole crane shot, which is what I'm set up for. It was insane. I thought, 'I've earned my stripes today.' I had to rip the door off and take the mirror off and do the shot looking through the mirror down the side. ... Anyway, I won't bore you with the details. We also have the single most complicated shot our visual-effects guy had ever done the day that Martin wasn't there, which is a full pan through the [computer-generated] lab of three witches in their glass cages. But we couldn't have glass, because it's reflective. We had to do a backward reflection for the visual effects."
Sanctuary will premiere with a two-hour episode on Oct. 3 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. --Patrick Lee, News Editor
