Well, I've seen it the first day it was out, and I thought it was pretty good.

My problem was not having seen the relevant Movie/Episode in ages, and for the Episode possibly not ever, or not completely.

Having seen them shortly after the movie helped with sorting through my memories - and confirmed what I'd thought, the movie's got more in common with the episode than with the movie.

There are some ... inverse movie-scenes, but the entire plot is the prelude to what happened in the old movie ... mirorr-universe style ... in other words, it's another version of the episode, not the movie.

I loved the new movie!!!! It was incredible!!!
I have to say that I was looking forward to an all new villain, so I was just the smallest bit disappointed there. That being said, I did really like how they portrayed Khan. Very different from the original, he's much more sophisticated, and looks less like a space hippie, but Cumberbatch plays an absolutely terrifying character.
I think that my favorite part was probably where Scotty saves everyone's arse by powering down the big ship.
Near the end of the movie I was wondering how anyone on the enterprise was still breathing/how it was staying up since it had taken so much damage. But I still liked it anyway.
The whole kirk/spock death switch was pretty clever.

That is an excellent point to the movie being more like the episode. I watched the movie several times last year, so I was much more familiar with that one, being that I only watched the episode once maybe twice. My fiance who went to see it with me had recently seen the episode, and he guessed it was Khan much earlier than I did. But I also didn't really want it to be Khan but was pleasantly surprised that they pulled it off.

Anyone know what Carol meant when she said she'd heard of Kirk, because she was friends with Chapel?

I planned to read up on the Kirk/Chapel thing, but haven't yet.

Also, was it just me or did Khan's voice sound very different at the hospital? Much deeper?

Another thing ... did that big black ship have any name? I didn't catch one.

Chapel was the head nurse on the enterprise in the television series, so my guess was that they wanted to tie her in somehow. I didn't think Kirk and Chapel ever had a thing, but they probably did run into each other at the academy.

As I thought, a tribute to Majel Barrett, but my memory was a bit blurry so I thought I might have forgotten some kind of connection.

Thanks for the answer

Wrong direction. Kirk is young. He has, on screen, at least, had Gaila and those two cat people in STID. It's heavily implied he has a relationship with Nurse Chapel.

But given what we know from the Prime Universe, I think it safe to say Carol Marcus is the one that tames him and may end up marrying Kirk and having David, as opposed to the two of them being apart in Prime.

My question just was if there was some Kirk/Chapel connection in the old universe that had slipped my mind, other than she being a nurse and he the captain.

And yes, it's pretty possible that Carol and Kirk end up as a couple... we'll see I guess.

One more thing I'm wondering ... What exactly did Spock tell Spock about how they'd defeated Khan back then? I can't think of an answer that would lead to taking his crew out and having the torpedoes beamed aboard.

From my point of view: How did they defeat him before..

Episode
Khan has everything under control, makes them watch Kirk die.
That historian frees Kirk just in time because she can't watch him die, they manage to knock down the guy who leads Spock to the chamber and then knock everyone out with gas except for Khan who activates self-destruct, then fights and is knocked out by Kirk.
Then they offer the choice between being shipped to Earth for trial, or being landed on an uninhabited planet and being allowed to live on their own.
He chooses that, the historian chooses to go along, end of episode.

Movie
They lie about how badly ship is damaged, then flee into that nebula to even the chances, both having limited sensors and no shields, outmaneuver him, hit his ship and his crew dies.
Khan sets off the Genesis torpedo to make sure the Ente is destroyed along with him, Spock repairs, Warp, they escape, end of Khan.

Nothing in there that is very similar to the new solution really, is there? Or did I forget something?

The only hint I could think of is that his crew is very important to him, but they should have known that already from what he did/said in the new movie.

I think that Spock merely told Young Spock that Khan is vicious and will do whatever necessary, including murdering everyone aboard and that he would kill all humans given the chance. With that knowledge, Spock comes up with a plan worthy of his good friend Kirk. That's my opinion.

That's all we heard, then young Spock asks how they defeated him, and the scene changes.

I guess it doesn't really matter - I just wondered.

Was anyone else a little annoyed that they spelt Qo'noS as Kronos in the Movie, I know it's a little error but it still bugs me.

I did wonder too, but dismissed it to concentrate on other things.

But I think it *was* spelled Kronos in the TOS-movies ... may be mistaken though.

It's spelt "Qo'nos" as far as I know.

Thus far, the only exception has been Gorkon's flagship in STVI: The Undiscovered Country when it was rendered as Kronos One.

Different subject: Jennifer Morrison, Kirk's mom, is listed in the credits, but I didn't see her. Was she on screen. Ditto with his dad (Chris Hemsworth).

Sometimes they will credit actors/characters of they reuse scenes from previous works.

I can't remember where in the movie but they showed a flashback of the Kelvin scenes (unless I'm hallucinating!) where they would have appeared, hence the credit.

The flashbacks were when he woke up again I believe.

I did wonder though how he could have a flashback of the moment he was born.
