This may seem a bit pointless, but for some reason I've been feeling extremely inquisitive about it lately.

I've noticed a ton of American chatters, European (Finland, Sweden, English countries, Germany, Netherlands) chatters, even Australian and Canadian chatters. Dwayne Hicks now lives in South Africa.... But.. is there anyone around that lives (or lived) outside of these countries?

Katey, I've wondered about stuff like that tons of time too....

Hong is in China.

Where was Kasumi Hai from anyone remember her?

I'd be most curious as well :)

Rudlls was from the Czech Republic, and we've had Russian members. We have had a fair few Kiwis (New Zealand).

Some countries are curious by their absence. I'm surprised never to have encountered anyone from Japan in OTF. And I've never seen an Italian, either! We also have very few French members. Or Spanish for that matter, though I seem to remember a few Portugese.

I remember talking to two people from South Africa quite a while back...tried talking to them in Dutch and understanding their Africaans, but it wasn't all that easy. *l* Don't think they stayed very long though.

See, I should have absolutely remembered Hong and Sloan (but it's a tad airy up in the brain spot).

I think I started to wonder about this whole thing because  someone had asked me if I knew any Kiwis, since I talk to such a "vast" amount of nationalities online... Hm.

Seems like most of the people outside Europe/US/Canada/Australia no longer come around! (Anyone living in Mexico either? :?)

And it's crazy, there's so much technology around the world and English is an almost commonly-taught language in those countries... Surprising not to know anyone from those areas. (I agree with Babel -- No Japanese is surely interesting..)

The problem is, Sci-Fi has never been mainstream. Even in Australia, nowadays, Star Trek in any form is like at midnight. The only real prime-time Sci-Fi would probably be Stargate and we're behind a while. Even Doctor Who is at 6pm, when everyone's either headed home or watching the news or cooking dinner.

You mustn't also forget different societies. Japan, for example, is the home of Japanese Anime, which makes the pokey little CGI effects of Enterprise or Star Wars look decidedly crappy. And this isn't an exagerration, just look at the classic anime Akira, which is absolutely stunning. Not bad for a movie which is almost sixteen years old!

And then we must remember that in terms of technology, not every country has a very robust communications capacity. Even in Australia, some of the more rural areas have decidedly poor connections.

All that aside, it's the lack of mainstream, within the society and just plain general lack of reliable internet access.

Then we have to acknowledge the fact, as great as the Outpost is, we're still a very small drop in a very big pond called the Internet!

-Quincy

PS There are more Australians than you might think. There's thirty nine and a half Australians with 10F! :P

That's less than I thought. =P

True, and that came to mind, but it's still a tad odd. You can't say a single person in one of these technological countries isn't a geeky Trekkie or Han Solo. Come on! That'd be like saying that no one living in Thailand speaks English. Anime is a big thing outside of Asia too, as sci-fi is outside of America. (Now it's true that in the less technological countries, they believe that the US is capable of time travel, advanced space travel, etc... Where are they?! =P)-

I'm still feeling ashamed for forgetting about Hong and Sloan. What can I say? China is now a part of Canada and Egypt counts as Europe. There. :)

*Pokes Ditz*

My point was..... Okay, let me start again.

There are X number of people in a country. Of those, there are X percent of those who like Trek/Wars etc. Of those there's X percent who surf the Internet and partake within large amounts of chat (as opposed to "pure surfing" the 'Net). Then of that, there's the X percent who happen upon the Outpost.

Even if we assume that percentage is maybe 1% each time (which is generally the acceptable percentage), for America, a population of say, 200 million..... That's about 200.

I know it's skewed in logic, but you have to think of it that way. How many people like it, how many people would like to chat and how many find 10F. It's that simple.

And before you jump down my throat saying the calculation for America is wrong, I'm making a point, not proving in fact.

Everyone thinks I'm out to slap them in the face tonight.. It's something in the muffins!

I'm just saying that there are odds of it happening. All in all, I don't really care about percentages and probability. It's just strange that we don't. I think we will, soon, though.

French people are very bad with the English language: I am in a computer engineering school, supposedly a place where everyone should speak English fluently given its importance in this job market, and everyone here insists that all the students need to learn the language. But I would say that about ten percent of the students have a "decent" level in English. I wouldn't know how to explain it but it does narrow down the possibilities of having French OTFers.<br>The second reason is that OTF is a Science Fiction related site, and that isn't extremely popular here. There are a few tv series, such as Stargate. But Star Trek isn't broadcasted, and I've never seen ST books in libraries. There are some Star Wars ones, but very few. And in general, there are very few Science Fiction books in the libraries. I also never met a French ST fan, and only two that read SW books.<br>So, even if accidents happen (<font color="gold">*points to self* </font> <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.outpost10f.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/win.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo--> ) we're not going to have many other French.

Mafia Geek and Servilcat are from New Zealand. We had a Star Wars member that's from Italy and a young lady from Israel that used to visit all the time.

Don't we also have a member from Singapore?

I have a good friend from Nigeria who lives in the US. She's more of a trekkie than me and has been here a few times. Can't remember her handle though.

Forgive me if this has been said before but not all sci-fi fans like to chat. Some JUST watch the shows, films and read the books.  Perhaps they even go to a convention or two.
