Hardware Firewall - A physical piece of hardware between your computer and your Internet Modem.
Software Firewall - Software running on your computer, or a physical hardware between your comp and modem.
In your case you have to ask yourself if you are going to set up a network and do all kind of strange things. If not, a decent software firewall is all that is needed.
If you, like me and C6, have separate comps on a network, a hardware firewall might be a nice compliment to a normal software firewall. 
On our setup, we have 3 layers of Security walls.
