Greetings OTF'ers,
After a discussion with several of the members of the Welcoming Committee, we would like to bring an issue to light in regards to certain nicknames that are used to describe most new CL1's and all of the newly registered CL2's.
These members of the chat are usually referred to as "n00bs", "newbies", or some derivative thereof, and although some members of OTF may see this as being a friendly nickname or as a "rite of passage," we have received complaints from these new members that it is very degrading and they feel it is a lack of respect. This isn't an "executive order" to not do this or that, but a reminder that all members here have been new to this site in the past and for most of us, we were not called "n00bs", "newbie", or ganged up on by those that are more familiar with OTF systems and chat atmosphere. So please let us all make an attempt to be more welcoming to our new folks, and give them a chance to learn the ropes instead of booting them out and belittling them.
The task of welcoming the new members of this chat site does not fall on the shoulders of the Welcoming Committee members alone, but on the shoulders of EVERY member of the Outpost. We ask that we all show the new registrants of the site why we call ourselves a community, by showing them the same amount of respect that they would show to the owners/founders of Outpost10f.com, or any other member of this site.
Keep in mind that we all agreed to the Prime Directives when we registered with Outpost10f.com, so if these guidelines are too difficult to follow then I suggest that another chat that is less "Family Friendly" may be more appropriate. Let us try to be more responsible for our actions and please direct any comments, concerns, and suggestions to my e-mail inbox. Thanks in advance.
Regards,
CL9 CT OTF Quadrant Commander & OTF Welcoming Committee

ah just to be devils advocate (and rather annoying), are said people and the welcoming committee aware that the terms n00b and newbie are used pretty much everywhere on the www, usenet and beyond to describe someone who is new? KK

KK...oh sweet, adorable KK...
Yes, those that do not live under a rock and have online access are more than likely to know of these terms. I grant you that, but it is simply a matter of trying to be more welcoming and respectful. I'm sure there were a few people that helped you out in your first month or so at OTF, and for that you are eternally grateful that they took the time to assist you. Calling people harmless names like 'n00b' isn't so bad once in a while, now ganging up on them and essentially turning them off to OTF isn't a good sense of community now is it? All I'm saying is that we just go easy on our new registrants.
Thanks for your devilish advocacy... You know I'm right and you're just trying to start something missy.

CT,
It looks as though you have an opposition, I think you should make this an executive order because then people will listen. I myself try to be nice to Newcomers, and yes I have used the term n00b on occasion. But I totally agree with you, and I think that OTF can't survive on just it's current memebership, though there are many members, if the community stops growing it will eventually die.. So to those people who don't want to make new friends, or are happy in their own little circles, go somewhere else!
That's my 2 cents...

Fine, executive order it is.
Please be more welcoming, help OTF grow in membership and try not to chase our new reigistrants out. If you can limit the use of 'n00b' and such, especially when someone is clearly uncomfortable, then make an honest attempt to do so. If you can't get the gist of this, then don't bother wasting the electricity firing in your cerebral synapses to figure it out.
Treat others as you would like to be treated...Simple as that folks.
