Hello all,
I thought I'd post how I make avatars.
In Photoshop I go File>New... custom size I set it to 45 wide and 55 high (that's an avatar). Next, I open my image that I want to make into an avatar. I use the selection tool (top left in the tools) and select the area that I want to be in my avatar. Next, I click the move tool (top right in the tools) and I drag while holding CTRL the selected area into the 45x55 sized image. Using the Free Transform (CTRL + T) I resize the image I dragged to the 45x55 image so that it fits into the visable space just the way I want it to be for my avatar. Then I press the check mark to apply the changes. Next, I go File> Save for Web... and save it as a high res. jpeg.
If you have any questions on this, feel free to grab me on MSN: nobbe@outpost10f.com ICQ: 125170854 or via e-mail: nobbe@outpost10f.com (or of course, reply here.)

Nobbe: One question. This may sound the epitome of stupid questions, but I don't care. What is Photoshop? Is it a software you have to buy from stores and such? Or...can you download it? Or...is it not even a software?

It's a valid question. =) I don't believe that there's a stupid question out there.
Photoshop is a graphic editing software put out by Adobe. It's an industry standard program that tends to be rather expensive if you actually purchase it. . . . . However, it can be downloaded and cracked various ways.

Nobbe Dear - Thank you for the instructions. Will it work similarly with my PaintShop8?? Just too darn cheap to pay for Paintshop

I use Paint Shop Pro, and it is seemingly a great deal easier.
I open my image, select the area I want to make into an avatar using the crop tool roughly the size of an avatar, crop, then change the canvas size to 45 x 55.

Thanks Brady - will play with it and see what I come up with. As soon as Eagle and his band of merry Engineers decide where to stash the Hoiday avatars, will send them off if I don't make a mess of them.

Yes, I agree with Richard. Nobbe's way is strange and foreign to me. Let us ostracise him for being different. =P

You can use the crop tool in Photoshop 7 that i know of to Resize your pictures to Avatar size, will Keep it in proportion and whatnot, just set the tool to the size you want, it will try to force you to do it in inches just type Px after the numbers you want. it should be on the top bar more or less under file
the Bar looks like this
Edit: thats what i get for not checking the size of the image carefully ReEdited to make some bit of Sense..
