Hey,

I am sure by now that you all would have heard of the earthquake in Indonesia and the subsequent tidal waves that swept around the rim of the Indian Ocean.

I know that yesterday I was very concerned as I have friends who have lived in Phuket for years, fortunately I know that they are okay; however my I am very saddened by the thousands who have lost their lives and for the families who have lost family members and all that the owned.

I am starting this thread so that if you want you can just leave a message here.

I realise as well that some of you pick up very quickly on who is collecting money for emergency relief and if you do please post the web sites or places that we can go to give money.

I was shocked when I heard the news, it sounds like something straight from a disaster movie unfortunately it's real :(

My thoughts are with those affected.

I haven't seen the news, but I have a friend and her husband living in Thailand.  Thankfully, I got an email from them and they're not hurt and neither are any of their friends.  But they say the effects are being felt all across Thailand and any prayers would be muchly appreciated.

The death tolls keep rising, last night it was in the 20,000's then this morning I awoke to 40,000. It's going to get much worse.

Here are a list of aid sites:

Care International
International federation of the red cross
Oxfam
World vision

This is terrible. Most of the affected places rely on tourism, so they've basically lost their way of life, in addition to the physical cost. I feel so terrible for all the lives lost and everyone affected. :(

It has been confirmed that Sir Richard Attenborough *whom you may recall as the owner of Jurassic park in the movie* has lost his daughter, her mother in law and his grand daughter.

Also, in addition to the islands moving *some up to 66 feet now* the earth actually wobbled on its axis.

Hello

From Toronto Canada, you may give money to any Police Station, Unicef & Red Cross. Here is my Canadian News report I got off the Internet.

Asian tsunami toll nears 125,000 confirmed dead

EDIT: Bulk of post removed because it was too huge.  This isn't the place to copy and past entire news articles.  A link will suffice.

It is now official there might be over 100 norwegans lost in the tidalwawe most of them could be children most of them were on holyday when it happend.
Til now norwegans have given over 150 million norwegan krone (15 million pound),and there have been surgested to erase the effected countrys debt(good surgestion whitch would be moraly the right thing)
I think the rescue workers in the contryes effected deserve what ever possebul credit for the way they handeling this situation.
Give money so that they can bild up agen thise effected contrys and let them get to start a new beginning agen with new hope, and possebilety of  a new future

I've donated as much as I could spare at this time. I also volunteer at a crisis centre in my town for people who have lost someone or survived. The stories I hear are heartbreaking and with over 3,500 swedes still missing, I have a feeling there's going to be a lot more. I'm happy to know that the person I knew who was in the area is on her way home as we speak, severly injured but able to travel on a stretcher. It's far worse for those who have nowhere to return to, so please, if you have any money to spare, donate them as soon as possible. I realise this is mainly me rambling but I'm a bit in shock still.

Can we possibly please have some sanity?

If you've got nothing positive to say, words of comfort or similar, please get out. No more joking, no more negative comments, by anyone, okay?

You're absolutely entitled to your opinion, but this is for those who do care. So if you don't, kindly go away.

To second what Quincy said if you don't have something meaningful to add then don't post.  This isn't the place for arguing.  Remember that the PD's cover the forums as well as the chat.

Zulin: if you don't actually have anything of value to add to the thread could you just not? I appreciate that you are entitled to your opinions but now isn't the time to voice em okay?

apparently, MY opinion only matters when other people think it should... therefor I will keep my mouth shut, or atleast try. I just think that someone who wants to voice there opinion, shouldn't have it removed because it isn't entirely sympathetic and loving.

For this thread yes it should be, it's for people who want to be sympathetic.  It's ended.  I don't want this to turn into a petty squabble.

I've donated!!

Everyone I know has also donated, and rightly so. Times like this when humanity needs to set aside the borders and race and embrace one another as citizens of one planet. It's good to see the world cares so much and kudos to all those countries and people who have donated.

I've been wondering what the best places to donate are if you can't do it over the net. In the uk, there are oxfam shops and I think post offices, anyone know of any more?

Queenie :) Most Banks take money for collections... me I never give to charity boxes  ..( but having said that I always go into charity shops and buy things )..  not after it was reported a few years back ( and no can't remember who it was.. red cross or Oxfam rings a bell ) that out of every £1 only 0.20p actually get to where it is needed..  the rest go on admin/ wages etc.. I would rather buy blankets / cloths / baby food.. anything that can be loaded into a lorry / plane which these unfortunate people can use right away..
When ever i feel really down or something makes me sad.. I read this .. makes me cry..but some how makes me feel a little better..
I came across this when I was looking for a card to send someone.. and i have kept it ever since ..Hope you don't mind if I shear this with you

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the LORD. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand: one belonging to him, and the other to the LORD.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the LORD about it. "LORD, you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed most you would leave me."

The LORD replied, "My son, My precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."
