Global aid organisations have launched urgent appeals for donations to help up to 2.5 million people facing starvation the West African state of Niger. Crops in Niger were badly hit this year by drought and a plague of locusts.
The government has made food supplies available but prices remain too high for many in Niger.
According to the Red Cross, the problem could spread across the region with almost eight million people at risk of hunger in Niger, Mali, Mauritania and Burkina Faso.
Before the current crisis, 40% of children were in Niger malnourished and the north-west African country had the second highest global mortality rate among children under five.
