As posted on the other thread, here are things you can do to help, three agencies that are accepting monetary donations online, by phone or by mail:

American Red Cross
http://www.redcross.org/

United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR)
http://gbgm-umc.org/umcor/

Episcopal Relief & Development (ERD)
http://www.er-d.org/

To donate food and clothing, check with your local Red Cross or assistance-type agencies... if you're not sure how, check with your local tv station, all of ours are broadcasting information. Or, check with churches in your area. Austin is preparing to receive refugees so our church is doing a drive to collect clothes, bedding, towels, baby stuff, etc. so that there are items ready to go when people get here. Groups in your area may be doing the same.

And this was posted by Dawn:

Please remember that not only do people need your help, animals and pets do as well.  Zoo's and wildlife are in need of help.

If you'd like to donate to help the rescue of animals and pets (this includes household pets such as cats and dogs), donate here:
Network for Good

Both Noah's Wish and The Humane Society are in need of your help.

This is also a place to go for the animals:

North Shore Animal League of America....  http://www.nsalamerica.org/

also..spare change  can help to. This was sent to me from a yahoo group I belong to:

Donate Spare Change
Donate Now to the American Red Cross at Coinstar machines

Just by bringing your spare change to the grocery store, you can help the American Red Cross bring relief to disaster victims in your area and across the country.

If half of those Americans living within 2 miles of a Coinstar machine donated just $1 in spare change to the Red Cross, it would raise more than $65 million to support American Red Cross lifesaving services in communities nationwide!

Find the Coinstar machine nearest you. (Please note that some Coinstar machines are not yet equipped with the donation option. To confirm that your grocery store can accept donations to the American Red Cross, please call 1-800-928-CASH.)

Learn more about how your spare change can help save lives.

Also ,there will be a concert to  raise monies for the hurricane fund:

CHARLESTON, WV - Burbank - In response to the hurricane tragedy, NBC Universal Television Group will air a live benefit special, "A Concert For Hurricane Relief," in high-definition on NBC, MSNBC and CNBC on Friday, September 2, 2005 at 8:00pm (ET), it was announced today by NBC Universal. The hour-long, music and celebrity driven broadcast will air live to the East Coast, tape delayed on the West. The telethon, hosted by NBC's Matt Lauer, will be broadcast entirely from the New York studios of NBC located in 30 Rockefeller Plaza. The special will feature performances by artists with ties to the affected areas, including Tim McGraw, Harry Connick, Jr. and Wynton Marsalis as well as an appearance by Leonardo DiCaprio, among others.

All viewers will be encouraged to donate to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund in support of hurricane relief through its website and donation hotline (www.redcross.org or 1-800-HELP NOW). The humanitarian needs from this catastrophic hurricane are immense and will continue to emerge over the next weeks, months and even years. The American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling, and other assistance to those in need for this disaster and other disasters across the country each year.

As the full extent of Hurricane Katrina's devastation is revealed, the task ahead challenges the capacity of any one organization to respond. To meet the needs of the thousands of Americans facing loss, the American Red Cross will work shoulder-to-shoulder with its partners in the federal government and the non-profit community to provide essential support.

Just a quick note to you all...

Please ensure-when you're donating anything (money, food, clothes etc.) that it is going to an actual charity and will actually get to people who actually need it.

I know that things like this will always have conmen out to make a quick buck from the goodwill of people.

Donate-just make sure it's going to people who need it.

Like always.

Friendly reminder ;):)

I don't really think this is the appropriate time to point fingers. The aide is indeed appreciated, as I'm sure elsewhere it's appreciated during natural catastrophe's.
What I do hope to start seeing more of, especially in the world we live in, is more peace. More countries banding together for a larger good. Ya know?
One simple "donation" seems to be dwelling in my mind. Cuba, a long time "enemy" of the US Government (please remember as well, most enemies as it were are there because of policies, procedures and governments not people in general) is standing by with over 1100 doctor's ready to rush to our aide. How amazing is that? Sometimes it's not about the money, ya know? It's about a feeling of "people are dying..I don't care what nationality you are, how can I help?"
I've felt the exact same way so many times when a horrible event occurs on foreign soil.
We all have one thing in common afterall, we're human.
Thanks for the love your showing my country...*s*

I'm still trying to find a site where I can send aid from the Netherlands.
I think a lot of European governments are donating through NATO but I still don't see a call for aid from private citizens.
(This is a little unusual because there are usually calls for aid from individuals for other disasters.)

The Netherlands is sending a ship with a special team to help identify bodies and several Red Cross personnel are on their way to New Orleans.
I made a donation to the Red Cross here and hopefully that will help make a difference.

While I was looking at theRed Cross site I did see request for aid for those in Niger. If we can spare it, those people need our help too.

I'd donate money or supplies, but all of my supplies are gone and all of my money's already been diverted to the "JD doesn't have a job or anywhere to live anymore because of hurricane friggin Katrina" fund.. :P Maybe next time.

(This is more of a jab at people that badger at me for not donating..*l* Ignore this if you want.)
