I thought this would be a good way for people to express their rants, concerns, coments, questions concerning animal welfare.

How many people share their houses with pets?

Would you adopt from humane societies or rescue groups?

Do you have good rescue programs in your area?

And what exactly is T-N-R??? (Okay, I know the answer to this question and am currently working to do this, but does everyone else?)

I am very pro-humane society.   Our last cat was a humane society cat, and we love her to bits.

I'm in the process now of trying to find a dog for myself and my family (mainly myself), and have been trying to find one through the humane society.
Unfortunately, with new provincial laws, the pit bull in any form is now illegal to own (although if the dog was born before this law was in effect, you are allowed to own the dog, under certain restrictions though).  The humane society seems to only have this dog :( The restrictions are too much for owners and they're expensive.
While I would love to own these dogs, I just can't afford them.

I just wish this law didn't exist :( I'd love a pit bull... and the ones I've seen at the humane society are cute and sucky dogs, they've never hurt someone in their lives.

Rant ended. :P

I make a point of running over at least one small annoying dog per month. *nods*

That was my spy rock that the russians found in moscow. :?

OK that was a bit off topic so I'll make an effort to say something close to related to the conversation...

Polson, we all know you can't drive well enough to hit a small dog. :P

We've got three cats, one's a kitten we just adopted from someone who didn't have their cat spayed - but that'll always happen, and we figure either way the animal will be sent to the shelter if someone doesn't adopt him/her.

Our first cat was abandoned in the parking lot of the college where we work, and we love him so much we'd decided to get him a companion so he wouldn't be alone all day - so we adopted another cat from this lady who rescues them. (almost a year ago, now) This particular cat wasn't the best decision ever. She's got some serious issues. Like, "cower in the corner and never let anyone near me" issues. But sometimes you get a glimpse of what she could've been if she hadn't been traumatized, and that's a very sweet cat. It's depressing.

But anyway - a new animal shelter is being built in our area due to the outcry from people about the horrible condition of the current one. I guess no one ever saw the need for decent shelter when they're going to be killed in 24 hours. (No-kill shelter would be nice, but doesn't appear to be happening.)

Actually, I had a cat once.  His name was Tiger (I adore tigers), he was orange with dark orange stripes and white paws and a white belly and a white chin and orange on the bottom of his hind paws.  He was perfect in every way.  I got him when I was 12.  He was my best friend in the whole world and I loved him dearly.  He lived in the same house his whole life until I moved out and took him to live on the other side of town.  Because of the neighborhood and how he wasn't familiar with it, I kept him inside mostly, taking him out for a walk now and then (he was an indoor/outdoor cat).  But two days before my 20th birthday at 6:30 am he wanted to go out and I wasn't in the mood to go out with him so selfishly, I just let him out and went back to bed, thinking he'd find his way back to me.

I never saw him again.  I tried all the shelters, the SPCA, searched the newspapers for his description, I drove around for hours in my car looking for him, I walked up and down the river calling his name and shaking a little bag of kitty treats...to this day I have no idea if he is alive or not.  He was too scared of traffic to be hit by a car...too wary of anyone other than me to allow himself to be taken in by someone else...

The trauma of losing Tiger was far more than I could take.  I spiraled into severe depression for almost a year and even now I can't look his pictures or talk about him without tearing up (or down right bawling like I am now).  Come this March it will be five years.  But I will never have another cat.  No cat can fill the hole Tiger left and I have no desire to fall in love with something so easiliy lost, so fragile, and be destroyed again.  Forgive me, animal lovers.

I went out to check my site and feed the ferals that I will soon be trapping as part of a TNR program, and found a rather odd little thing this morning.  At first, I was kinda scared to go up to him. I thought, "It's a skunk!  No, it's a black and white weasel!"  Then, I heard his screams.  MEOW! MEOW!  Oh My God! It's a drowned kitten!  I took him into the house, wrapped him in the first thing I could find (which wound up being a sheet, but it was folded a lot and provided some warmth and dried him off).  I called my vet, explained that I am 100% penniless but needed to get him him ASAP.  Of course, the receptionist had to ask the vet, who said to bring him right in this minute.  So, I put the kitten in the carrier and rushed him to the vet office.  I didn't have an appointment, and the waiting room was full so I had to drop him off and wait for them to call me to come pick him back up.

They bathed him, rinsed his eyes of all the microscopic debris, gave him some antibiotics and eye ointment.  Right now, he's curled up in my lap wrapped in a very soft and very warm beach towl.  I still don't think that he looks like a kitten....more like a ferret or something.  But, now I get to worry about how to find him a home and pay his vet bills.  I've already spent $1000 this year on rescue efforts, what's $150 more?

I pickd my first two ferals up from the vet today.  One girl has long hair and is black and white.  The other girl has short hair and is black and white.  They are as grumpy as ever, and made sure to hiss and spit at the staff to thank them for their services.  OKay, they're ferals, so they don't do much other than hiss and spit.  And even though some say that they should be, "brought in to be humanely euthanized to rid their suffering and burden to society" I strongly feel that they are cute, should be respected, and should live out the rest of their lives peacefully on our small ranch.

I got 2 cats at the mo but i did have another. I had 2 persions both had been mistreated my the breeder. one was a runt so not well taken care of flees, ear mites and not well fed cos he wasnt wotrh much money to her. the 2nd was a lovely black longhair with gold eyes but the breeder used her as a breeding machine. we had to get her put to sleep in the end as there was so many problems with her health we where just glad we could give her at least 1 and a half years of happiness. RIP Topaz  :(  Amber however has grown in to the most wonderful companion and Jasper and he mean the world to me.
